Well, tonight we lost the ps forward rear tire. Full blow out of the side wall but fortunately no damage to the air bag, rim or fiber glass. About 150 miles back we heard a strange noise from that area, stopped and could not find anything wrong. We drove on. About 100 miles ago we stopped again and still nothing obvious. 50 miles back we stopped for about 15 minutes, looked all around and still could not find anything wrong. A few miles east of Rockwell City, Iowa, the outside sidewall let loose. Road side assistance came from about 50 miles away (why not from the near by town????) and we limped back to a tire store in Rockwell City that said it had a tire of the right size in stock.
We purchased these Toyo Open Country tires in Jan 2007. They all have date codes in late 2006 so they certainly are not "old". We don't know what happened. We have about 45,000 miles on this set with lots of tread left. All of them show the same even wear pattern so there must have been something in the road that weakened the sidewall enough to blow out 150 miles later. Anyway, no harm, no foul and we are "camped" in the parking lot of the tire place.
The bad news is the only tire of the correct size and rating is a Firestone which is far from my favorite tire. So is life.
