I've got the stock threaded radio antenna mount on the roof, but no antenna attached to it.
The coax inside is intact. Is that antenna special to GMC's, or is there some modern one that'll fit??
Hints appreciated on what's supposed to go there, the thread size, or where to find a replacement.

I have the same, tall antenna mast on my GMC, but am going to replace it at some time. Jim Bounds at GMC Coop had provided me with a nice, short, amplified antenna that is supposed to work very well. I'm tired of hitting all the low-lying branches that cover all the streets around here!
If you do want to keep your original setup and Jim is not able to provide you with a mast, let me know and I can try to save mine when I replace it. It is not very high on my list right now, so I don't know when I'll be able to get to it. If you are interested, you can PM me.

You can find the anttenna at West Marine.
The mast will fit the GMC base.

Does the antenna wire run down the middle of the windshield? I think I might have to replace mine as the AM/FM part of my stereo quit. Any tricks to replacing an antenna?

Basing my comments on my Glacier and pending if the PO got his fingers into it or not.....
The antenna wire does not run down the center of the windshield. I beleive it runs down the post on the driver side between the windsheild and side window.
Back in the 70s, those windsheild antennas in the glass were big. I heard it was an effert to stop punks from pulling the antenna mast off the cars. They sell after market of these units but they are not great for Long Distance Receiving.

On my 76 the answer is yes. It runs through through middle over head frame and straight down the split between the two windshields. Also it plugs into the antenna near the base so you do not have to remove and replace the coax to replace the antenns.
I doubt your problem is the antenna but you can check it out with an ohm meter. The biggest thing that goes wrong with them is the connection to ground at the base of the antenna. Take it apart, clean up the mounting to the aluminum skin, cover the ground connection area with anti-oxitidation grease, and reinstall. You will have to clean the same spot if you replace it.
Unplug the antenna from the back of the radio. With an ohm meter, measure the resistance between the shield of the coax and some BODY GROUND connection. It should not be more the a couple tenths of an ohm. If it is more, then clean the antenna mounting in the roof.
Second measure from the center pin of the connector to the shaft of the antenna. (you will need some long ohm meter wires.) Again the reading should be a couple tenths of an ohm. If it is not, then you will have to find where it is open.
Third, measure between the center conductor and the shield. It should be open with infinate resistance. If it is not, then you will have to go find the short.

On ours it does. And I couldn't budge it when I was repairing where the PO had cut the cable to install the TV in the cockpit roof...
It appears you remove the big flange nut up on the roof side of the antenna mount, and then push it down to remove it from the ceiling.
On the inside, ours is located about 8" to the rear of the cockpit curtain track, in the center.
