My wifes 93 Corolla has always had great a/c until last summer, then this summer its completely gone. Its always been an original system and it has the R12 nipple. I suspect after 17 yrs although the system is still 'sealed', and its a low miles vehicle only 115k, that the original charge eventually just leaked out.

My question is - can I just try loading HC12 in? Without a flush? I can evacuate it and even flush it I have to, but I think the system is still intact and sealed and would respond to a can or 2 or duracool, as long as it will not react negatively to such an R12 environment with no flush

My 93 Yukon did exactly the same thing a year ago. I happen to have a cyl. of R-12 with about 27 lbs. left in it. I topped it up to 25- 30 p.s.i on the low side & this spring it's still fine.

Years ago, folks stated that you needed to run your A/C
occasionally (once a week?) even in winter so that the
lubricating "oil" would keep your compressor seals tight.
If you didn't, it was likely that you'd have to add more
refrigerant to make it work correctly.

I put Duracool into a 91 probe that still had r12 in it, works great.

That is one reason why US made cars engage the AC compressor in Defrost and other modes.

Of course, the AC helps remove condensation in the car in winter too.

I seriously doubt that the GMC motorhome
A/C is set up that way, though!

Heck, the fan on Money Pit only works at the
lowest speed and does NOT move much air!

R12 when available, is upwards of $120 a pound now, if you can find it. My mechanic saved it for years, doing retrofits, he finally used up his last stuff. So the longer you hold on to it, the more it will be worth, but you can definitly unload it for a couple grand I bet just by tossing it into the back of your car and paying visits to a/c places, they will take that stuff off your hands for sure.

Seems the discussion drifted and did not answer your question.

From what I understand, as long as the system still has something in it (has SOME pressure) you can put HC12 (or equivalent) with the left over refrigerant. you will have to experiment to get the correct pressure as you will not know exactly what your mix is.

Also, with any unknown mix, do not expect any "professional" to touch this AC in the future. (For many reasons.) But they, in the US, will not touch any system with a KNOWN Hydrocarbon based refrigerant. So this might not be an issue.

If your system has leaked all the way down, it will have moisture inside. It should get more than a "topping off."

Theres still some pressure. I'll try a can of HC12, I ordered 3 today. I should probably put some oil in too. Mineral oil I guess? Just a little shot? I wonder what Toyota used. Its still sealed from when it was new. The car was taken care of and driven soft.

Far as any shop not touching it, I have no problem with that. I will probably end up retrofitting it myself in the fall. I just want to get her thru the summer.

Thanks all

It would be best if you can leak check it before you try to charge it ,my 1990 4 runner had a leak from the discharge line rubbing on the brake line. If you feel confident that it is not leaking just add the duracool to the existing charge of 12. You will probably end up with around 25 lb suction when it is full. When the suction line gets cold and wet you should be about charged the Toyota most likely has an expansion valve in it.
I charged a Chevy Tahoe today after replacing the compressor and it was full at a little more then 20 lbs.of 134. My Toyota was full at a little more then 25 lbs. of Duracool an a Scotch of 134.

Rusty,
Bleed off or evacuate the remaining R-12 and try the Duracool. It's
a $12.00 fix. I wouldn't worry about lubricant unless you find a seal
leak that actually weeped oil.

Rusty, I agree with Steve. A trick on locating a refrigerant leak is the oil trail. If you can't find one, the leak was probably slow enough that only an insignificant amount of oil escaped. Excessive oil charge = less cooling. All R-12 systems I know of used mineral oil.
