This beastie was discussed about a month ago, I believe.

As a newbie, I have a lot to learn, that's for sure. I gather
that this would autoswitch between "shore" power and genset,
and that without such a device, one would have to manually
connect the desired source.

That brings me to another question about AC power. I know that
boats have two versions of 240V AC power circuitry. One is
strictly 120 Volts at 50 Amps, and the other is 120 Volts either
side of neutral for a total of 50 Amps, meaning each 120 Volt
portion can draw a maximum of 25 Amps. Which of these systems
is in use in a GMC?

The reason I ask is that I have a line on an unused ITS-50R for
what seems to be a reasonable price and wonder if I should bite
this bullet now.

Thanks for any advice which is a mere smattering of what I'll need!

Mac,

The standard GMC power system is neither as described. RV 50amp is 240V 50A 3-wire. It is 120V either side of neutral, but good for 50amps on either or both legs. (Disclaimer here: GMC boxes that I have seen are fit with dual 40Amp breakers in the main feed.)

If you want an automatic transfer switch, an Iota 50 will do well. There are even instructions in their book about connecting a 120V genset (Onan) and a 240V Shorecord (GMC) to a 240V panel (GMC).

Some marinas here on the lakes are the same as RV-50 but the connector is a L14-50 (twist lock 120-240V 50amp).
