I'm also trying to convert to Duracool. I'm assuming the system currently has R12 in it. Checked the pressure at the low pressure side and it was 65 plus pounds with the engine not running. Was just going to bleed of the existing gas but the high pressure got me worried. Does the system have to be running to bleed it off and insert the Duraccol. I have Emery's rundown but am in a quandary as to whether the air conditioner must be running or not to bleed off the old gas and insert the Duracool when there is already pressure in the system. Also 65 plus pounds seems excessive from what I am reading. (My Duracool kit comes with a guage and will only attach to the low pressure side)

Bob
If the pressure in the system is 65 lbs with the engine off that would be normal pressure for R12 at 68 degrees. You could bleed it off to a slight positive pressure hook up your Duracool to the low side jumper the loss of charge switch start your engine turn on the a/c and suck in the duracool all without needing a vacuum pump. If you desire you could just add Duracool to the existing charge. Either way would be OK. The engine needs to be running and the air on to charge it.

Just remember, or know that, the duracool needs to be charged with the can upside down!
Also if you are using an AC gauge set, that has 2 gauges the high side gauge needs to be off when charging.
Personally I'd just add duracool if the system still has R12 in it

good point I always charge with the can upside down regardless of the type of refrigerant. If it is 134 or 12 just throttle the manifold valve so you don't slug the compressor.

That is a good point Fred I just assumed he didn't have a full charge. With 65 lbs pressure at 68 degrees you may be right. I prefer the R12 in my coach and that is what I will put in it if I have enough. I recently recharged my 4 runner with Duracool after I fixed a leak so I could save the little R12 I had left If I needed it for the coach.

Duracool can be used to top up a R12 system but with the price so cheap it will cool far better to remove the R12 and install Duracool alone.

i understand that but it sounds like his system is fully charged and no one said to check the pressure with the engine running to see where he is with it but instead said to add Duracool.
