G’day,

This subject comes up constantly with people that are looking for GMC’s. I
did a search on Gene's website for "bed" and nothing came up. I'd suggest we
put together a listing of the various GMC models and their bed sizes. List
the advantages and disadvantages also. When the list is done Gene can post
it on his website to help prospective GMC buyers decide which is best for
them.

I’ll start with my 26” Avion:

Driver side length as measured in the center of the bed from the rear wall
just below the window to the wall of the bathroom: 74 inches.
Driver side width as measured from the side wall of the coach to the side of
the dresser / nightstand in between the beds: 34 inches

Passenger side length as measured in the center of the bed from the rear
wall just below the window to the wall of the closet: 74 inches.
Passenger side width as measured from the side wall of the coach to the side
of the dresser / nightstand in between the beds: 34 inches

Advantages of rear twin bed:

1) Don’t disturb partner to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.
2) Don’t have to make up the beds nightly.
3) Dresser / nightstand between the beds.

Disadvantages:

1) Anyone over 6 feet tall used to sleeping in a Queen or King sized beds
(80 inches long) may have problems sleeping in a bed 5 inches shorter. If
they are used to sleeping in a California King (84 inches long) the problem
could be worse.

Additional advantages / disadvantages solicited.

Jackie,

Excellent, I never thought of that! Guess that's because I snore and Helen

I snored like a bulldozer, Lisa was ready to kill me. I went in for a sleep study and found out I have sleep apnea. Got a C-Pap machine.....not only do I not snore at all anymore, I sleep like a rock and I feel 100% better with more energy than I've ever had.

You may want to consider looking into it.

I had a friend who was diagnosed with sleep apnea, told it was so bad he should ALWAYS use his CPAP. One night he didn't, died in his sleep and the death was attributed to sleep apnea. This is not something to take casually.

Yes, my husband was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. This presented another problem when dry camping and using the machine. And he really needs to use the machine at night. We recently went out dry camping and hooked up the machine to a wheelchair battery. We got two nights out of one charge. Worked great.
Anyone else try to use a CPAP machine while dry camping?

I have severe sleep apnea (597 wake episodes during my overnight sleep study...) Just one more reason why we don't go tent camping anymore. I have a kit to run my CPAP off a battery, but have never used it. Was able to use a plug-in in the pop-up before. Had plans to dry camp, but never did it. One more reason why I'd like a MH: not having to unpack the CPAP all the time...

Absolutely serious, which is the reason that I have used mine every night for the last three years since being diagnosed. Waking up in the middle of the night and sitting up in bed TOTALLY UNABLE TO BREATHE is an experience I don't wish on anyone. I was clinically depressed and on anti-depressants before I was diagnosed. The reason for the depression turned out to be guess what, sleep deprivation!

Not wanting to have a heart attack in the middle of the night due to not using my CPAP keeps me plugged-in and sleeping!

During my sleep study, the first 3 hours they said I woke up 90 times......after I put the CPAP on, the remainder of the night I woke up 3 times.....it has changed my life and I wouldn't sleep without it. I even have a 12vdc model I take in the motorhome with us.

I just installed a 12vdc plug near the bed.....the unit weighs 3 lbs...very small, draws very little current. We do most of our camping dry and we've never had a problem with the battery running down from the cpap.

This is very good information. I also have a small unit, a Respironics. I don't use the heater for the humidifier, so I'm certain the current draw is minimal.

Rob - This thread has rapidly changed from the topic suggested to a discussion of sleep apnea. I probably could benefit from a a sleep study. I suspect my seemingly constant state of fatigue is due to a sleep disorder, however I like your idea about sleeping and other accomodations for tall people. For instance, I know in my heart of hearts that a center kitchen Royale would probably be the most readily available coach with the potential for 2 places for me to sleep. At 6'5" I believe I could make do with the sofa on the passenger side since my feet could hang into the entrance well. If I'm not mistaken some of those had a dinette that folds down at the foot (door end) and makes an unrestricted bed. That is valuable information for me.

Less readily available but better for me would be the Edgemont. They seem to be pretty rare, but have 77" twins. That would be fine for me.

Good idea.

Stick,

Having a bed that's long enough is a big deal to me, even though I'm "only" 6'0".. And that seems to be a constant problem with many of the RV's one looks at. For instance, I've always been intrigued by the T@B trailers, but their "queen" mattress is only 74" long, Many other RV's have the same length "queen" mattress, which SHOULD be closer to 80" in length at least at home. While RV's are NOT the same as a house, having to sleep flat on my back with my head and feet smack against walls is not my idea of a good night's rest, at least for myself as I generally sleep on my side/stomach.

While the Edgemont may have the longest twins, those twins are in the rear of the coach, which make using them as couches less than ideal. I like the idea of being able to have a foot hang over the end of the bed if need be.

A database of bed lengths is still a great idea.

Hi Steve:

I snored both continuously and with long pauses of no breathing for many
years. Since marying Mary, who wears no perfume, I haven't snored at all. My
adult children can hardly believe the change.

The common (steel framed) dinette in most 1975 to 1978 GM and Coachman upfitted coaches is "unrestricted." No head or foot boards... so more room for taller people. The metal spring dinettes are better seats than beds. (IMHO)

The wood framed dinette used in 1973/74 (and some others like the Avions) is a little wider but is restricted by the seatbacks. Like sleeping in a box. I have found the seating less comfortable than the "newer" dinettes. The foam is more comfortable for sleeping... If you are not tall.

My palm beach was converted to a permanent rear bed by the P.O. He was about 5'-6" on a good day. The result was a slightly confined space for someone six feet tall, like I am. I have always had a hard time really stretching out on that bed. It was suggested, by a fellow GMCer, that I remove the panel at the foot of the bed, in our case on the driver's side of the bedroom. This panel does not appear on the floor plan lay-out of any of the GMC factory rear bed models. It's only function is to cover a couple of ducts that have very limited effectiveness, and the cable that goes to the house battery.

This weekend, I started on this project, It involved removing both upper cabinets, so I could get the mattress out, and a bunch of other small things, mostly related to repairing some wear and tear items. I got as far as cutting down the removed panel and re-installing it at a height of only about 3-1/2". It now has the dual function of covering the small duct (I removed the larger one) and the cable, as well as holding the mattress in place. I put the mattress back in and tried it out. I could hardly believe the difference. The four or so inches I picked up made the bed much more comfortable for my height and sleeping position (on my stomach with my feet hanging off the end of the bed)

I still have to make a panel to cover the hole left in the wall, and put everything back together, but I am looking forward to a better night's sleep on our next outing. I strongly advise doing this if you find the bed too confining. I wish I had tackled this job sooner.

you should have removed the small one also, It only goes to the bathroom
from the booster fan, (neither of which work)

I could have, but there was room for it, so I couldn't think of a good reason to.
