To All - Has anyone had any experience with adding a Hard-Start Kit to
their roof AC? Mine was having a problem starting last year so I replaced the
Start Capacitor but it did not help. I pulled the Start Relay in the Fall
and have been trying to locate a replacement. From what I've read, these
Hard-Start Kits replace the Relay with a Solid-State version and a larger
capacitor for the initial boost. Does anyone have any suggestions on Brands,
Prices, or Where to Buy?

Thanks,

You should be able to get a hard start kit from an appliance parts store or an A/C parts store. They come in a couple different sizes and are rated by tonnage. You are correct they replace the start capacitor and start relay. They don't cost much. Roy

A hard start kit can be installed as a pro-active measure for some of the older units as well. When the A/C is started after wintering over, the compressor is usually fairly dry of lubricant, so it's prone to increased starting load until the oil circulates. This makes that first start the hardest on the motor windings. It won't hurt the compressor to have one even if it starts OK now. I plan on getting one even tho my A/C compressor starts OK because I can hear the genset pull down more on the first start than it does on starts after it has been running a while. It can't hurt it to have one and it's worth it if it makes it last longer. I'd rather pay a little now than a lot later as long as I have the more critical fixes done elsewhere. It's a bit of cheap insurance for older A/Cs.

Thanks, this is the original AC unit from the 70's. I tried to get a
replacement relay but it is out of production. The AC manufacturer went out of
business in 1978. I opened up the relay and filed the contact points. The
coil buzzes out OK so that might do the trick. I'm going to pop it back in and
if still no good, order the Hard-Start Kit.

If you want to get the correct original type start relay here is what i would do. write down the make of the compressor(Tecumseh ?) the model and serial number of it and check with an A/c parts house they should have a cross reference for the correct relay. This is the way I always did it I never used the Mfg of the unit.

Thanks Roy, I will go that route is this relay works when I re-install it.
From what I've heard here, the Hard-Start looks like the best way to go
anyway.

You had asked if anyone had experience with a hard start kit. Last year I installed the kit noted in Rob's link below to modmyrv.com.  My replacement 15K btu  AC started OK on shore power but the 4K generator would only start it part of the time.  The hard start kit was an easy install and worked great.  Doug Norton

Thanks Doug, I might just bite the bullet and order one. If I have to
dissassemble the whole thing to put the relay back in then I might as well have
one on hand as Plan B.
