Hi all,

I know there's plenty of hams and lots of CBer's out here. What ideas
can you share about antenna installation. I hate to cut holes in the
skin of this coach, but where did you mount your antennae and what
strategies do you suggest for getting the feed line to the
dashboard/cockpit area?

Gotta start thinking about our first field day in a GMC!

Thanks and 73 de Desmond, KC6VHG

Desmond,
I have them mounted all over but no holes. Got a two meter 1/4 wave on the refer vent, for the aprs. Fixing to put a 2 ft whip cb antenna right behind it on a heavy magnet. Kept losing the window mount which was no good on 27 mhz anyway. I do have a window mount 2 metter/44o and it works great. On the bumber I have a ball mount for my hf hustlers, auto tuner mounted next to the TS 50.
I don't do well with holes either.

I have one of the antenna mounts from the Curtis's. <http://www.bdub.net/curtis-unlimited/index.html>

It seems like a nice place for an antenna.

I have an on-glass Dual band (2m/70cm) on the drivers windows and a
Yaesu ATAS-120 HF mounted in the ladder.
I also have a ball mount on the spare tire carrier (in the middle).

That's my plan, pretty much just the ATAS120 with my FT-897 from the
house. I'll probably also put up a dual band on an NMO because the ATAS
is kinda crummy on VHF/UHF. I'm also going to put in a CB (I've got an
old CB-FONE 40 that's been waiting for a purpose) as soon as I get to a
truck stop for the antennas for it.

I'd like to see pics if you have them of how the mount on the tire
carrier works. How did you bring the feedline back to the front? Under
the coach?

Hi, DC.

An SO-239 type mount in the center of the roof requires
only a single 5/8" hole. I have forgotten the hole size
required by the NMO mount system.

The SO-239 type offers better shielding at the feedpoint
than does the NMO. Diamond has good combo VHF/UHF gain
antennas for both mounting systems. I use two UHF and
one NMO system on our "regular" vehicles. I haven't
installed any ham gear on our recently acquired GMC.
That comes after getting it roadworthy!

NMO style is called a 3/4" mount, but the actual hole saw for them are a tad smaller. If you use a run of the mill 3/4" hole saw you will be sorry as it will be a tad too big.

The left mirror is the cellphone groundplane for the repeater.
The right mirror used to be a marine VHF vertical dipole.
Both were on Wilson brackets that clamped to the stock mirror shank. There is no counterpoise there. I did have to remove the mirror and drill through the skin to get the feed into the cab, but the hole is behind the mirror mount.

When I needed to mount CB for an excursion with friends, I drilled a plate and put a stud mount(3/8-24 female to SO239) inside the left rear bumper and ran RG-8X to the front along the frame rail. I do not recall how I got through the cab floor. With a 108" whip it loads pretty good, but it favors forward by about 4dB.

Tom, I think it is, well, I just can't recall. It has been on there for 5 years and no problems. Check ebay. I lost two cb antennas on the passenger side so I just gave up on that. They are not good for 11 meters anyway. I have the 2/440 on the driver's side so it has never met up with any tree branches.

Thanks Dan,

Is that the driver's side upper window or the fixed window behind it?

I have a 1/2 inch PVC coupling mounted on the passenger mirror bracket left by the PO. I can only assume it was a CB mount but could be adapted for other things. It's a good location to run the feed right into the dash. Not sure how he grounded it to the body. only the Coupling remains...

Yes, Upper window. Out of the way. Keep it 4 inches from the metal, I think that is what they say in the instructions.

Dan,

Four inches from the glass - upper driver's side. Thanks again,,,now to
figure out where to put the radios. At least the GMC has plenty of room
inside!

My coach came with 2 CB antennas mounted to the right angle tubing used to mount the mirrors.  After one got snapped off, I replaced it with a 2 meter antenna.  PO had holes drilled inside the bracket that mounted the mirrors to the coach.  Holes are big enough to let the connector ends through and they are easily accessed from the dash.  They do not let in much rain, but need to be sealed to keep outside air from coming in.  Also vendors Burt and Fay Curtis make an antenna mount bracket (they displayed it at Auburn WS rally this month) that fits behind the original mirror mount bracket. It has an antenna mount hole on top.  (email is curtisunlimited@aol.com I think PH 707 443-8523).  On my SOB several years ago, I used Duct Tape to hold a mag mount on my aluminum roof.  I put it against and in front of the pod and also taped it to the pod. It worked; Rube Goldberg would have approved.  I think the ladder would do well for a temporary mount or
support for a stationary mount for a field day antenna.

For good performance on 6m, 2m, 222 and 440 the only place to install the antenna is on top of the coach. If drilling a hole is not to your liking then clamping s small steel bracket to your roof rack and using a mag mount up there is your next best solution. I routinely do this for 2m APRS and run the lead in through the stove side air vent or the refrigerator air vent.

My 2m com antenna is a traditional through the roof mount with a base loaded 5/8 wave antenna. It is mounted through aluminum skin and works great up there. My PO had a CB antenna up there which I removed and threw in the trash. I reused the mount and replaced the junk RG58 coax with RG-8X for 2m / 440 use.

For lower frequencies like Chicken Band you do not have many options due to the length of antenna required. For Chicken Band that has the just slightly better than a a battery powered megaphone, just about anything will do. In my opinion the best solution is the antenna w2ww2I removed from the center of my roof. It has a good counterpoise (ground plane) up there.

The absolute worse place on the GMC is the mirror mount because the mirrors are mounted in fiberglass.

On 10 - 80 meters I would use some kind of screwdriver or hamsticks mounted to the ladder, the roof rack, the spare tire carrier, the trailer hitch receiver, or bumper.
