Art,
I believe we were talking about this at Crystal River. The unit you commented on was a Carrier low-profile 13.5k. So far, it's the quietest AC I've heard.
I also have an older Dometic Penguin 13.5k on the coach in the middle position and it is a relatively quiet unit as well, just that the airflow noise is *very slightly* more than the Carrier.
I had a full-height Carrier 13.5K for a couple of years. That was a relatively noisy unit, both in the airflow and, especially, the sound and vibration level of the compressor. I took it off late last fall and installed the low-profile Carrier in it's place. Very noticeable difference! Now the full-height Carrier takes up space in my garage.
I also like the low-profile Carrier in that it has seperate fan motors for the inside (evap) and outside (condenser). This way the condenser fan runs at full airflow even when the inside fan is running at low speed.
Just my opinion!

HOWEVER, Carrier has decided to get out of the RV air conditioner business and are no longer making them. The only ones you can buy are from the dealers that still have stock. They will be orphans and eventually you will not be able to get parts.

Emery,
I agree on the "orphan" issue. However, our GMC's have the same problem and we deal with that pretty well.
Specifically, what would I need service-part-wise that would only be available from Carrier? All I can think of is maybe the thermostat may wear out in a few years (I rewired mine so both the fan and compressor cycle together) or a capacitor may go bad. The stat is just a standard Ranco part and you can use industry-standard GE caps.
I had to replace the stat in the Penguin last year and I found a suitable replacement on Ebay. Not exact, but a universal-type that was easily installed, works fine, and was purchased for a very reasonable cost. The stat in the Carrier can be replaced the same way.
If the sealed refrigeration system fails then I would buy a new unit, not repair the old one. Why spend a few hundred $ replacing a compressor or coils when the whole thing costs $699. What are the chances of needing sealed-refrigeration-system parts? I've never replaced, or known anyone who has had to replace, a compressor or coils on a sealed-system anything (refrig, window ac, rv ac, etc.) yet. When a sealed-system fails it's probably way past the end of it's expected service life anyway and something else, like caps, stats, or even the chassis of the unit has decomposed. Even my original swing-motor-compressor Norcold refrigerator still works fine!
If this Carrier lasts 10 years then I've got my money's worth and will replace it when it fails with what will probably be a better, more efficient unit. Who knows what the future brings. With the R-22 units being discontinued as of this past January I have no idea what "new technology" RV air con to buy. At least the R-22 Carriers have proven themselves over the past few years to be a quality unit and as long as they are available I can't see any reason not to buy them.
What would you buy?

I replaced the Coleman Mini-Mach on my old Toyota MH with a Carrier Air V.
It was louder than the Coleman, especially when the compressor kicked on.
But the Mini-Mach was a 7000 BTU vs. 13,500 on the Carrier, and it ran
fairly well off the 2800 watt genset. I ended up keeping the Carrier (along
with the Onan Microlite 2800 genset) when I got rid of the Toyota a few
years ago.
I didn't realize Carrier had ceased production. They had a great product.

Bob,
Somebody spotted these and posted a message about them awhile back and
bought two of them with the heat strip:
http://tinyurl.com/2wao9hq
http://www.adventurerv.net/dometic-duo-therm-brisk-air-conditioner-13500-btu
-p-130.html?osCsid=cv5l9mv65esaokrp3khap4qr86
The reason I wanted two is because 27,000 BTU will pull the temperature down
in a hot coach a lot faster than a single 15,000 BTU unit and if one craps
out you've still got air!
I will be selling a good Dometic 13,500 BTU unit once I put the new ones on.

I have bought a few things from that site and got good service that Rob pointed out. I did not want another Brisk Air since they produce to much noise. The Brik AIr I have worked good but I had trouble with mud daubers and had to take it apart. I agree with the need to have two AC unites. When I stopped at a park and it was 98F in the coach, I was glade to be able to run both and cool it down. My coach still has the original rear unite but it sure helped. I have decided to go with the low profile Carriier for the noise level even though it cost twice as much. Bob's Low Profile Carrier was much quieter than my Brisk AIr and my wife wants quieter unite. I will be moving the Brisk Air to replace the rear unit which will give me 27,000 BTU. At 95 out side a 15000 BTU unit would work since I had the rear AC on high and the front on low with the AC running at less than half. Neither AC would do it by itself at 95 outside sitting in the direct sun light with the blinds pul
l down on the sun side. My wife likes it to be no hotter than 75 F inside. If I could have gone to 80 F, I except the 13,500 unit would have been adequate.
Thanks for all the comments

Art,
There was one other reason I went with two Brisk Air hi-efficiency units,
the 50 amp service in the Avion was capable of handling them both running at
the same time along with other a/c powered items. The 6000 Watt Onan can
drive them both too.

Living in Santa Fe and traveling the Southwest I thought that I might need two air conditioners also.
However, I bought a single BriskAir 15000 BTU High Efficiency and have used it in Phoenix when it was 120 in the shade and was able to get the inside of my GMC down to a comfortable mid 70's.
Of course, I may have insulated my GMC better than you have as I sprayed a full coat of urethane foam in in years back and I use a Zip Dee awning and insulated Hunter Douglas shades to help keep the cool in.
The newer DuoTherm are so much better than the older ones and I think it is very quiet as well.
