Here are the as found measurements of the weights and springs from Dan Greggs governor.

I think it is fixed and plan to put in my coach to check how it works. Got me a governor recal kit to experiment with later.

Any one have any experience with a recal?

Bill Bramlet glues the can back together with RTV and lets the bail ring hold it in place.

springs are rated by X weight per .010" compression. this could be measured with a dial caliper and a weight scale. it would be interesting to see what the difference is in the springs.

i still suspect that all this combination of parts just lets the tranny shift at different RPM's. did the kit come with a chart?

No mph or rpm chart. Here are scans of the kit instructions.

Basically you change things and see what happens.

Wally,

I've never tried it, but I've always understood that the governor can be
changed, even with headers, if the cover has been cut off and retained by
the bail, as mentioned in Fred's note below. How about with your new cover
retainer?

This reminds me: I need to check whether the governor can be R&R'd with the
Cad500 installed.

Well you would have to get a screwdriver in there to take the four screws out and then the top of the can would come off. I pondered making the O Ring seal on the inside of the top and then have the bail hold it together. There is not much weight/can clearance to work with and an outside seal was easier.
If the retainer was attached to the top making the O Ring captive then screws wouldn't be needed. Then the bail would be the only thing holding it together. Didn't think about that until now. Duh, that would have made it easier to make...

Wally;

How much 'out-of-balance' do you think the gov shaft is after the brazing?

Thanks for the pic's.

Well it looked pretty straight. The weights are unequal and they would be unbalanced. Swapped it in my coach and went for a drive, it shifts like the one I took out except in holds first a shade longer. Fished the springs out of my original and measured them, weights look the same. The yellow spring measures significantly different! so maybe spring color doesn't mean much?

I read that Bill Bramlett advocates drilling 1/4 holes in the secondary weights.they are .060 thick and one hole would remove .38 grams. I plan to swap in the 7 gram weight and see what happens.
