So I got the Hush power muffler today, and got it installed.

Fit,
It's tight fit I had to bend the frame rail down a little to make a little clearance. The Flowmaster 70 actually fit height wise better. Too bad it was so wide.

Sound
It's a little loud at idle, if it was a street rod I'd like it. nice rumble. But it's a motorhome.

When you blip the throttle, it really raps, sounds like a ricer with a fart pipe. If it were a street rod I would not be happy, but it's a motorhome...I'm not happy. I'm going to try and find a resonator for the dog leg, maybe that will take out some of the rap.

I didn't get to drive it, it got late and I have a loose transmission cooler line. Maybe tomorrow, but they are promising rain...

Keith,
The sound will be bad. And it's much worse with a Caddy.
Larry Weidner found a nice polished SS resonator that will,
hopefully, make the noise tolerable.

I had an idea last night ( at like 3am Sad )
I think I am going to remove the hush power and use the flowmaster 70.

But I'm going to cut down the 70. If I take 2 inches off of it's width it will fit really nice.

I do wonder what it will sound like. I suppose I should do a before and after comparo eh?

Worse comes to worse I can use the hush power as a resonator....

Keith,
I tried several mufflers back there always getting the same awful "rap". Final solution was a 70 series Flowmaster with a resonator....sorry about that. I've found that you just gotta have a BIG muffler back there. Here's a pic of the resonator in place in the dog-leg.

Larry;
I remember you saying that about your muffler experiance. My problem is the Royale has a grey tank in back 11" from the frame rail. Not enough room for the FM 70, hence the attempt to use the Hushpower.

Question. Did the 70 have as bad of a rap??

Keith,
No. The 70 had the least rap of all of the mufflers I tried. Non-the-less, while I couldn't hear it in the cockpit on the open road, when I got into town, I could hear it echoing off of the curb and buildings. Also could hear it in tunnels and in overpasses. Wasn't real bad, but irritating...not the kind of sound a good hot rodder would like, and it has to be unpleasant for the people walking the sidewalks. The resonator seems to have taken care of that. My pea brain tells me that you have to have a LARGE muffler back there. We are muffling 8 cylinders at once instead of the 4 with a duals system. Just what I think...

I wonder if Larrys noise is due to his Cadillac 500 engine. I have had
the Flowmaster 70 for several years now and I don't think it is very
loud at all. Several others also use it and none think it's bad

OR, perhaps Larry's ears are just that much more sensitive to most of
us!

The 455 Olds has a very characteristic rummble no matter what muffler
is used.

Well, the firing order is different, and it certainly could be a perfect storm of type of exhaust manifold, size and length of pipe, and placement of the muffler in the system that is creating the objectionable sound. I have traveled with other GMCs to several rallys and everyone that gets next to me in town has commented on the "unusual" rap from my exhaust....who knows... I hope I have finally found that solution.

What is the compression of the Caddy?
the 455 is pretty low compression, maybe thats part of the difference.

Or maybe it's cubes, my 455 is now 468, getting close to that 500 Caddy Wink

I think my olds is closer to 7.5:1 ( so says the engine builder), that could explain the more rap in the Cad.

I have a 10.5:1 Vette, that really has a rap, even at idle and thats only 2 points above your 8.5:1

Mmmm, I don't think so. The very same 500 powered a 73 eldo back in the 70's and was whisper quiet. JMHO, but I think it has a lot to do with not being muffled before it hits that long 12' of streight 3" pipe down the side of the coach, then into a single muffler. Friends that have the Cad 500 with dual mufflers up front, may be a little loud, but don't have that same irritating rap. Each muffler is muffling 4 cylinders at a time. I'd bet that those that have two 70's up front have little trouble noise. Twice the muffling surface.

Here is the promised sound clip.
Unfortunately I have to take a video to get the sound.

I tried to load it onto the GMC photos site, but it failed twice. So I posted it to my company site.

It's 11 mb lets see if we can make use of that bandwith I pay for!
