Would you put K heads on a GMC 455 engine?

Charles,
This was the subject of a recent thread...

http://gmc.mybirdfeeder.net/GMCforum/index.php?t=msg&goto=84756&rid=904&srch=k+head#msg_84756

If I needed replacement heads, had the K -- I would use them.

Dennis

Carl. I had been looking to have an extra set of heads for that JUST in CASE thing. Found J heads. But most were cracked. Spent a lot of cash for getting them cleaned, and checked for cracks. Just to be disappointed to have money going down rat hole. I do have one that has been blasted, mag-na- fluxed for cracks, 3 angle valve job, and painted that was on a low mileage engine. This GMC I now have. Has a fresh engine in it. So that head isn't needed anymore. I'm coming to Tucson this next winter, could ship, or I know of people from here that winter in your area. Bob,

It looks like I will need that head. We can talk about it further if I think I need it before you head this way. I would be more than willing to pay whatever additional it would costs for shipping if it comes to that.

Thank you very much.

Also Bob, I DO know a guy locally who is a big Olds enthusiast that might like the K head and might be able to give me a lead on a J head. We'll see and I'll let you know.

I have a set of Ka heads if anyone is interested. PM me with any interest.

*K, Ka 413191 80cc 2.072" 1.625"
1973-76 factory W-30/ Marine/ Irrigation head replacement unit. Rumored to have possibly been supplied as original equipment on some '72 W-30's. Accepted by the NHRA as a stock W-30 head. Large valves, 2.072 and 1.625". Big 80cc chambers which yields poor compression figures, but so are the C's, etc. unless you shave them. Rumored to flow not quite so well as C's [source: Mondello]. Valve rotators on all valves, therefore deep spring seats, allowing either rotator retainers or very stiff springs. Hardened exhaust seats. Exhaust heat crossover is NOT blocked off. Not quite so rare or expensive as the other 'exotics' (F, H's). Also said to be found in 1973-1974 standard shift big blocks found in Cutlass'.

Bob,

I would like to get that head from you. I had a leak down test done today and the whole right bank was not up to par with one cylinder only retaining 14 PSI (out of 100) and a second only at 47. That is the side with the K-head on it. The J-head side was better although only one cylinder passed the 90% test with 91 PSI. Two were at 87 and 89, and one at 78. Not great, but at least not a dead hole.

I PMed you, but then realized you are probably an emailer only and don't get forum PMs. My email address is carljr3b AT (@) yahoo.com. We can discuss price and shipping. I will not be doing anything with this until August, but would like to have the head in hand by early in the month.

We have spoken on the phone before and my contact info is all on the Black List if you would like to talk.

Thanks,
