I posted this to the Revcon group and got some response but there is a lot more 455 knowledge here so if no one minds.....

For the shakedown drive home on 200 miles of mostly flat road the instruments
were as follows

Oil temp was around 190.

Water temp didn't get above 150- except when I shut it off after a 70 mile
stretch. Then coolant bubbled from the expansion tank. I assume that is due to
the trans being hot and heating the water in the radiator when the rig stops?
The next time I let it idle for 15 minutes after a long run and it did not
spike.

Oil pressure around 37 lb

vacuum - 17 and falling to zero when I opened it up.

If these numbers tell us anything meaningful please enlighten me.

There may not be a thermostat in the thing if the water temp never got above 150.

That just occurred to me as I posted it. I'd say it's pretty likely there is no thermostat.

The coolant boiling when the engine was turned off is normal. I believe they call it "heat soak." When running the coolant is circulating and isn't in the hot spots of the engine for long enough to come to a full boil. When the circulation stops, the water in the hot spots boils... expanding and pushing some coolant out into the expansion tank.

When hot, letting any engine idle for a while before shutting off is a good idea. It reduces heat soak.

I agree that it doesn't look like the thermostat is working (not closing) ... if it even has a thermostat.

What Dan says is probablly correct. The trans has zero to do with it.
Again, is your recovery tank the correct size?

The temperature gauge could be giving a false reading, I
would check it.
