George,

Double Trouble has a leaky oil pan to block gasket and a leaky rear main
seal. I bought an oil pan and installed a second drain plug that I will
install when I do the job.

As I have yet to do this I don't KNOW what I'm talking about, however, I
have studied the Maintenance Manual and it appears that you have to drop the
final drive and transmission to replace the oil pan.

Rob,

I haven't gone out and looked, but from what I recall from R&R of JR's
transmission a couple of weeks ago, I think you could leave the final drive
in place and just remove the transmission. I don't think the FD will
interfere with R&R of the engine oil pan.

If no one can confirm that, I'll look at it tomorrow & report.

Can you wait until the next engine and/or tranny rebuild to change the pan? You can always patch it until such time.

JWIWD (just what I would do)

Drain oil
wire brush off the rust as best you can
clean with carb cleaner and then brake cleaner
coat areas with pinholes with thick layer of JB Weld
paint with heavy rust primer (or POR-15 or Chassis Saver)
paint

replace when engine or trans change makes access easy.


I did this with a auto trans cover on a car and got 3 years more out of it. No leaks there when it went to the scrapper.

Ken,

I reckon as long as the end play in the drive axles will allow the final
drive to drop down far enough to get at the bolts between it and the pan it
should work.

I'll confirm it when I drop the trans at the COOP.

I took advantage of replacing my pan gasket when my tranny was out. I used the diesel engine gasket set. I had to raise the engine a bit and If I recall, I pulled out the steering bar to get the pan back in without screwing up the gasket. My Final Drive was out.
