I have been told not to manually shift the GMC transmission into second gear as it uses a band instead of clutches. They said the band is very small and can wear out quickly.
When the transmission shifts by itself it uses the clutches.
Is this true?

Not true, you won't wear it out. Shifting into second for down grades
is a common practice and I also have a shift kit.

the rule is, go down hill the same speed and gear you go up.

shifting down while at a high rpm. to slow down is a no, no. Brakes are
better at this and have more material than the clutches.

ask Manny about the clutches and bands

Gene,

I think Manny told me something along the lines of:

Trans Rebuild = $1500 + 8 hours labor

Brake Pads = $100 + 1 hour labor

It's your choice!

this came up before and someone said that when climbing a hill it was better to manually shift to "S" than to use the kick down switch. more clutches were used manually shifting.
can anyone confirm that?

This is what it says on Gene's site. Not sure if it was Manny or David
that said this. Good info however...

"When in "S", the tranny line pressure (which applies the clutches)
is increased from its normal 60 to 90 psi, to a more robust 135 to 160
psi. This almost doubling of pressure should greatly reduce the
chance of slipping/burning-out your clutches."
