Well, out for a test drive after reinstalling my carburetor. Throttle tip-in is fantastic. So much that I can do a burnout without using the brake pedal, and with the wheels pointed straight ahead. the best thirty bucks I've spent on the entire coach.
There is a nice patch in front of my neighbors house.
I just have to get the choke can set right (yeah, like I need a choke in this climate) and tweak the secondary metering. Getting a bit too much gas now when I floor it. Can see it through the butterfly valves. Runs better with the secondaries locked out, but now I can plant my foot while moving and get acceleration instead of bogging.
Woo Hoo!!!!

Just bought a rebuild kit and three cans of carb cleaner. rebuilt it, tweaked the primary needle valves a bit. My carb was in good enough shape that my rebuild came out OK. if it were any worse, I'd have sent it to get it rebuilt by Dick or Jim. Still have that manifold crack, but it runs so good, I'm not going to do anything else to the engine just now save for new Valve cover gaskets and an AC compressor.
I used Walker Kit # 151034 from Checker-Chucks-Kragen-Orielly's.

Chris,
After reading your writeup on carb rebuilding I googled walker products and ended up with this off their website http://www.walkerproducts.com/_pdf/Carburetor_Tune-Up_Kit_OEM_Interchange.pdf and on page 117 the interchange for the 745254 carb was indeed the 151034. Looking at the Oreillyauto.com and looking at listings for '76 Toro listing had several to choose but not this one but if you enter in the 151034 up pops the kit for 16.99 and in stock at my local store about a mile away.... tomorrow I'm there to get mine. I figure for 16.99 it's worth a try and can always send it to Dick or Jim if I make things worse, but trying to solve a rich hot idle problem.
I thought that this interchange for carbs would be helpful for all not only for their GMCs but what other toys we might be playing with.
Good find Chris

John,
IIRC from emails submitted there are certain parts that make the QJ for the
GMC different from the QJ for the Toronado.
I had my QJ rebuilt by Dick Patterson so I don't have a clue as to what they
are.
When you get the kit could you lay it out and photograph it and post it on
the photo site so that someone that knows the QJ could look at them to see
if contains those parts?
If it does I'll bet this company gets a lot of orders! ;-)

I had been told that some of the differences is inside the passages of the carbs so it would not be apparent by just looking at the carbs or the gaskets or replacable parts.

Yup. $16.99 plus three cans of carb cleaner and a bunch of new various sized vacuum hose and one tee (From my drip irrigation parts box) and you have a $30 rebuild. Just back from another test run. Tweaked the choke a bit. Still need more tweaking, as the lockout on the secondaries is not releasing just yet, but manually releasing it, my Bog seems to have dissipated. I have "CJ" secondary metering rods and "H" hanger FWIW.

Make sure you use the old power valve spring. The springs in rebuild kits are designed to go into power enrichment at about 11-13 inches of mercury vacuum. That spring will result in a lot of cruising in power enrichment mode, with mixtures in the 12:1 or 13:1 range. Fuel mileage will be poor.
The proper spring for our application engages power enrichment at a vacuum of 7-8 inches of mercury. The springs are available from the usual suspects, I think, if you don't trust the old one.

This kit didn't provide any. I had to use the old ones and just change the seal on the valve. Actually, this kit was mostly gaskets.
