All,

The Onan would not crank, just the starter solenoid would chatter. I found that the battery cable was corroded where it splices at the contactor. I could wiggle the connection and the Onan would crank. Question is why would they make such a splice in lieu of using two cables - one from the battery to the solenoid and one from solenoid to the black terminal?

The cable is corroded and needs to be replaced. Should I replace the cables with two separate cables? The A&P in me says two separate cables!

Jon,

As a Detroit engineer for too many years, that cable is one part number and two cables would be two (2) different part numbers. That cost difference would have been an issue at the next review.

If someone was doing this today, the FMEA would have noted that two cables would be adding an additional crimp and terminal to the system with the advantage of the crimps can now be a gas-tight assembly. I would put a higher reliability score on the two cable assembly.

Sorry, I'll sit down now.

Matt
