We just rented a couple of pullers from AutoZone in Ocala, FL.

AutoZone happily loans you an array of tools. The deposit on the tool is the same as the purchase price. All you have to do is return the tool for a full refund.

If you happen to break or deface the tool, thst's OK, they just give you another one. Most of the tools I've rented for net free were new or looked new. One of the pullers I just rented had seen a lot of use and was nicked up, but funtioned perfectly.

I rented those two pullers to pull the Onan flywheel. The puller I used was actually a heavy duty looking steering wheel puller.

AutoZone is really helpful in providing specialty tools. This a great resource when we are away from our shop.

Don,

I want to pull the flywheel off Double Trouble's 6000 watt Onan; do you
happen to remember the part number of the puller you used? Is it on the
receipt?

Rob,

The two pullers I borrowed from AutoZone were:

#555516 27017
Steering Wheel Puller Set, EA $20.00

and

#555524 27019
Harmonic Balancer Puller, EZ $15.00

All charges fully refunded after return of pullers.

I believe I used the Steering Wheel Puller. It was a heavy duty unit and the 6KW Onan flywheel came off easily.

However, I learned once the flywheel was off that our 6KW Onan starter could be easily removed without removing the flywheel, contrary to what the GMC Maintenance Manual said.

Don,
Yes you can remove the starter without removing the
fly wheel but you can not replace the starter bracket
without removing it. Make a list of the order in- which
you remove all items unless you want to take some
things off and put them back on two or three times.
Don't ask me how I know.

Cool I'm in Minnesota,
Where are you?

I'd be happy to pay shipping if I can't find one locally.
My GMC's nose is way up in the air. 1.5" too high...
