Just getting the Murray ready to head out on our first GMC rally next weekend and I notice I have a leaking CV boot on the driver's side. This is the same one Cinnibar replaced last year and has less than a 1,000 miles on it.

Any ideas why it went again so soon? I can't see where it rubs on anything. Actually I can't see a crack, the boot has collapsed in on a rib on both sides, maybe due to grease escaping and air can't get back in.

there is always this

http://gmcmotorhome.info/front.html#boot

and I know one GMCer who used "shoe goo" to patch one until he could it
replaced. It held for 3,000 miles and was ok when he took it off.

cleaned area well, used some fiberglass and the goo , and it held.

good luck

If it is oozing out on the big end it could be they banded it with a grease film between the boot and the metal. If this is the case you will have to unband it and clean this area with lacquer thinner or something to get this area dry and re-band it otherwise it will always ooze grease in this area.

Are you sure that it is the boot that is leaking? I got fooled at least twice by grease that dropped off of the upper ball joint after I did a grease job. Appeared at first to be a leaky boot. When I wiped the grease off of the boot, there was no hole to be found under it. Drove it and still no appearance of a leak.

Oh pretty sure its got a crack.
There is grease flailed against the top and bottom control arms and the underside of the fender liner. There is grease around one area of the boot where it has collapsed in and not the reast of the boot.

I still can't see where it could hit anything.

Sir: I believe the most common cause of premature failure is the lower ball joint cotter key rubbing the boot. Most people I know do not replace the small inner band that clamps the boot to the axle. This gives the boot room to flex instead of collapsing. The grease will not leak out cause the grease is slung toward the outside.

I was just on the phone with Frank Borrmann. He can squeeze me in Wednesday morning.

Borrmann's Garage is the goto place in Southern Ontario for GMC repairs. He has a GMC and a FMC. He's not on the web so I'll give him a plug here.

Bruce,

IIRC there's a bracket that holds the brake hose that can cause problems
too.

I'm in the process of updating the Local GMC Service Provider
Recommendations and note that Chuck Camroux recommended Frank's shop.

Please let us know how he does with your problem.

As it turns out he is on the web:

Rob,
I noted that bracket and its got good clearance from the boot.

My steering box was replaced and rebuilt, I wonder if I have the tighter turning 4 turn box and it gets stretched on tight turns?

I see Frank is on the net now. I even google mapped his location and he's been photo'd too. You can see several GMC's in the background!

This collapsed rib seams to be a common problem. Many of us have just cut the small clamp off. This allows the boot to not twist, and keep the rib collapsed. There does not seem to be a problem of grease leaking from the axle end by leaving off the clamp. If you have a leak then that needs to be addressed. Mine was not leaking it just had collapsed ribs. Probably caught it soon enough to take corrective action.

I had Cinnabar do my boots and they turned brittle and hard and cracked into V shaped shards in about 5 years/3000 miles with indoor storage. They use the green Saganaw grease. I spoke to Wes about this and he in my opoinion played "dumb" to it and said that is the only recommended grease to use. IMHO there is some incompatiblity between that grease and the type of rubber boots they use as it a definite chemical reaction. I have the ones Jim K sells on there now by Dorman and we will see if they last longer. I think they will.
