Hi Guys and Gals,

In the two weeks since I announced that the General is for sale nearly 500
people have visited my website. Thanks for looks and referrals. I have not
sold yet, but have some good prospects.
https://sites.google.com/site/motorhomegmc/

However, *in protest I suppose*, the General has a broken refrigerator. I
believe the thermocouple has failed on the propane side, the pilot lights
while I hold the switch in, but goes out as soon as I release the switch.
The Refrigerator is a Trav'ler (probably not the original unit). Any ideas
or suggestions. Can you successfully add an inverter to run just on the
120v side? Does anyone have a recommendation or a refrig for sale?

Mike,
The General's Driver

PS: Conversations regarding sales can be sent to me directly, rather than
clutter the list. mfrothinger@gmail.com

Do you live anywhere near the Amish fellows who repair refrigerators? I understand he is very reasonable.

Maybe someone can chime in with the address of this guy so that you'll know if you are close.

Mike.    The thermocouple is an easy & cheap fix . Any hardware store or the big box stores have replacements. Your symptoms are typical thermocouple failure. In another life I was a R.V. propane tech.

It does sound like the thermocouple. They don't cost much. Go to a Home Depot or Ace Hardware or Lowes and buy one. It is the same as for a home water heater.
The differences are just in the length of the tube and you can coil one up if its too long.

Mike, sorry to hear about the refer. I remember the Traveler(by Elixer) very well. It was one of the better units in its day. You may want to do some checking before condemning the t-couple. Make sure your burner flame is adequate to heat the end of the t-couple. It may pay to disassemble and clean the burner. Also check your LP gas pressure to make sure it is o/k. Check that the end that goes into the safety valve is secure. If all of this checks out it may very well be bad, but if memory serves me well, I seem to remember the threaded portion that goes into the valve being different than what you can buy at Lowes, Home Depot and such. The Traveler had a lot in common with the Instamatic refrigerators and they shared many parts. I hope this helps and good luck with it. Jim

Mike, I just remembered a company I dealt with many years ago. Jeff's Gas Appliances in Willit, CA. Very familiar with the old Lp refrigerators. Not to far from you. Jim

I am not going to talk to you , since you are leaving the fold.....

but if I was, this is what I would say...

Thermocouples are a hardy bunch. The problem is normally not the
thermocouple, but where they live -----

1 in RV refers, what often happens is little spidies get in the burner, and
the tube that is above the burner, and either deflect the gas (before the
flame) or stop it from going up the tube.

2 you might look at the burner (through the inspection hole ) where ever it
is, and see if the flame is hitting the thermocouple.... Often the Spidies
can deflect the gas so the flame might light, but not touch the
thermocouple. ( I have fixed 3 refers doing this). You might even watch
the flame while the wife holds the switch in.

3 clean the gas / burner / tube area with a small brush, even pushing the
brush up the burner tube.

4 good luck - you old sod - will miss you

How are you going to visit that cabin in Shasta ?

Hey guys,

Thanks for the input. As the saying goes,"location is everything" and I
don't think I can convince my wife that I just need to make a little run to
Indianan., maybe Willits. The info on thermocouples being interchangeable
was good to hear. I had kind of written off the possibility of finding a
replacement. I did call Jim's shop and they are looking for a replacement
frig. Too bad Gene won't speak to me cause he has "pulled my fat out of the
fire" several times. I'll let you know my progress. And believe me this
group is going to be, by far, the toughest part of parting with the General.

Hi Guys and Gals,

In the two weeks since I announced that the General is for sale nearly 500
people have visited my website. Thanks for looks and referrals. I have not
sold yet, but have some good prospects.

However, *in protest I suppose*, the General has a broken refrigerator. I
believe the thermocouple has failed on the propane side, the pilot lights

The Refrigerator is a Trav'ler (probably not the original unit). Any ideas

*Got Beer On Ice*. Our refrigarator is back on-line. I appreciate all the
help and advice. It turned out to be the thermocouple. When I pulled it
the tip had burned through. However, all thermocouples are not created
equal. Turns out the Universal Thermocouple is not quite universal. The
Trav'ler Refrigerator has a small unit all it's own. After several false
starts, including a trip to a machine shop, I located a source on the
internet. PPL Motorhome Parts and service www.pplmotorhomes.com carries the
parts for the Trav'ler.

The part arrived in about three days, I installed it and we have propane
refrigaration once more.

Thanks again for all the help.

Mike,
The General's Driver
