Back in July 2002 I did an extensive study of shocks. Some of you might
remember my posting the findings. When Bruce asked about shocks I
went looking for that previous post. A copy is below. Keep in mind any
posted prices are 2002 prices.
Charles
KYB KG 5435 front $37.72
KYB KG 5436 Rear $37.72 KG5436 is 18.66" extended and
12.91" compressed = 5.75 stroke. This shock has an extension
and compression bumper built into it. Under load and under compression the
shock will extend & compress an additional .25". The top mount is an eye
with a 5/8" ID rubber bushing with a separate mounting pin parts pack. The
pin's 5/8" threaded shank has been lengthened to accommodate the
revised(thicker shock mounting boss)suspension arm. The lower mount is an
eye with bushing and 9/16" ID steel sleeve x 1.625" long. The shock has a
dustcover. The shock is lifetime guaranteed. I was told by KYB that they
were valved to handle extension first and compression second. I bought these
for my coach.KYB's motorhome brochure illustrates test results for KG5435
and KG5436 shocks run on a GMC motorhome for over 100,000 miles. The shocks
tested at 95% of new for damping force after this usage. A copy of that
brochure is on bdubs site. http://www.bdub.net/publications/kyb.jpg

Bilstien Front B46-0940 $76.31
Bilstien Rear B46-0950 $76.31 Has a 476.5 MM (18.76 in) extended length and
a collapsed length of 350.0 MM (13.72 in) = 126.5 MM ( 4.980 in) stroke. It
is vented 93/80 newton meters. The price keeps me from recommending these.
The only reason I would buy them over the KYB is as a status symbol but I am
not a status seeker. I think this is the shock recommended by Cinnabar and
Golby. I have not confirmed this with them. Note: They are not properly
vented
and the stroke length is incorrect for our coach.
AC Delco 022011969 / 4975541 rear These are shock numbers on Delco shocks I
bought in Sept 1989. I have been told this is a discontinued shock. No one
had it in their system. Local supplies, the Ac Delco hot line and General
Motors their parent company were not able to help me. I called AC Delco help
line 1-877-466-7752 and was treated like something you usually flush down
the toilet. The person I tried to talk to at AC Delco, kept trying to set me
up with a shock for a P3500 motor home chassie. He finally told me they do
not show a shock for a GMC 230 or 260 front wheel drive motorhome. He was
very rude and didn't seem to want to help. I then contacted their local
distributor and although I was treated much better I was told the same
thing, they no longer produce a shock for our application. I had given him
the number directly off of the shocks I bought in 1989, the number off of my
receit and the number of the shocks listed below that are currently being
installed by some of the GMC
service groups. After several hours he returned my call and informed me they
are no longer producing any of these shocks and do not produce a shock
sutable for use on the GMC. I then called General Motors to try and get some
help. Mr. Bird with GM customer service took my report and tried to
investigate this for me. When he returned my call, about 3 hours later he
reported the same findings I had found and told me that the limited life
time warrenty has a 10 year statue
of limitations and that AC Delco no longer had to honor it. I don't think I
would put another AC Delco shock on my coach if they were free.
AC Delco Front- 560-08
AC Delco Rear- 500-148
Gabriel 82010 front, have an extended length of 16.46 and a collapsed length
of 13.23 with a 3.23 stroke. Gabriel 82061 rear, have an extended length of
18.71 and a collapsed length of 13.60 with a 5.11 stroke Gabriel's reply to
me for further information on there shocks when I inquired about venting
was: "These units will not be sufficient for this application. Gabriel does
not offer a fit for this application. I can only suggest returning to the
motohome manufacturer for replacement."
Monroe Front LE10045
Monroe Rear LE10046 have extended length of 19.25 and
a collapsed length of 13.75= a stroke of 5.50
Upper Mount- 5/8" Loop Lower Mount- 9/16" Bushing and Sleeve
Some of you have posted that you are using the above shocks.
Although these will fit they are incorrect for use on a GMC.
It is a 70/30 valved shock absorber. Note this is backward from what the GMC
should be. Monroe told me on the phone that they do not manufacture a shock
that is vented correctly for our application.

I will probably be the only one to register a complaint about the KYB's. I purchased my KYB's in 2004 from one of the GMC suppliers and installed them. Now, 6 yrs later, I pulled all 6 wheels off to do a brake and bearing check and look the suspension over good. Rear shocks...just fine..no issues. But the fronts...the rubber bushings in all four eyelets has deteriorated. The shocks are no longer centered on the bushings, and the rubber bushings appear to be squashing themselves out of the eyelet. I called KYB about this issue. They do not provide replacement bushings, and the bushings are not covered in their lifetime warrantee. I pulled the shocks off, and found that the stroke still has lots of resistance, indicating to me that the valving is working properly, so I can't use that as a reason to warrantee them out. I don't want to let them go so that they rattle around on the mount and eventually break the eyelet, or worse the mount and then get them covered by warrantee, So I decided to MacGyver them. I put several large washers on either side of the rubber bushings in an attempt to confine the rubber to the eyelet. I will run this over the next year...watching it closely, and see how it survives. I am somewhat disappointed in KYB that they won't address this issue with me.
Just my relatively informed, off the cuff, back yard mechanic, gut level, eyeball it up and guesstimate, way of doing things....that's all...

The KYB ones for our coach is made only for our application.
Like everything on the coach, sales # are decking.
I tell the Factory Rep to not drop the par, but raise the price.

About to place an order for these KYB's online... looking forward to installing them myself and seeing what a difference it makes over my 6 year old shocks with 50-60k miles on them.
Now, before I do anything stupid, I'll ask a basic question:
There are
2 KYB KG 5435 up front
and
4 KYB KG 5436 in the back?
Just want to double check before I hit SEND on this order!!!

You might want to consider Jim K on your order. If I am not mistaken they
come with a lifetime warranty. Is that right Jim?

So I pulled all 6 shocks. the rears are all shot, very little resistance and some have no pressure left, you push them down and they stay there. some are wet, some are very wet...
The fronts look good, very hard to compress and then very hard to extend and they do extend on their own.
Sending them all back, we'll see what Bilstiens says.
Anyone else sent shocks back under warranty?

I would take Jim K up on his offer to get warranty coverage for you. He warrantied two KYBs out for me a few years ago even though they were on the coach when I bought it and were of unknown origin. He's got a lot of clout with those companies. The only issue I know about with Bilstein's warranty is if the shocks are physically damaged, such as having an eye broken off the end.
