What's the best pertronix igbition to use for the onan? I see some have used a few different kits...

We started out using the Olds module. I consulted with Pertronix and they
suggested the VW module might be a better configuration -- that proved to be
untrue. Others have used still different ones. It doesn't really matter.
IIRC, the Pertronix tech said they only have a couple of different basic
modules mounted on numerous brackets. Just be sure it's the original design
which requires magnets to trigger -- I don't know how you'd make the later
version (Igniter II ?) work since it senses the distributor lobe.

including even for 2 cylinder engines in both US & foreign vehicles; it's
virtually certain that there's a better choice for the Onan among them, but

We have one kit that costs more as we use the Pertronics that Onan incorporated.
It is easy to install than the other. I studied that design for some
time,but felt it was going to take our shop too much time to install.
Ous takes about 1hour to do.

No question the Lawrence Gaskins version of Pertronix installation takes
more time and ingenuity than installing the Onan-supplied Pertronix module.
But it also eliminates one of the worst features of the Onan design -- the
cam-operated plunger. That's undoubtedly the source of the erratic timing
common to the Onan.
The Gaskins mod also offers the opportunity to build in more spark advance.
It has been reported here in the past that someone discussed Onan timing
with one of the original design engineers. He reported that the chosen
advance (24*?) was significantly less than optimal but was chosen because of
the erratic timing inherent in the system. Ken Burton, IIRC, advanced his
several degrees with good results.
I don't have an Onan nor any other dog in this fight, but I think the
Gaskins mod is one of the best things one can do to an Onan.

It was no easier to mount. That's the only difference I've seen about any
of the 3 (maybe more) different configurations I've seen used. The Hall
Effect modules themselves are virtually identical but the metal mounting
brackets to which they're attached vary according to the distributor for
which they're intended. So do the magnets -- the Olds (generic GM) magnet
carrier is a disk that fits on the distributor shaft and carries 8 magnets.
A 4-cylinder kit has only 4 magnets in its wheel -- but only one is needed
for the Onan.

That would be the preferred way Rob. Nothing is more accurate than
crank triggered spark. Any of the units would work, all it really is
is a hall effect sensor reading a field from a magnet that passes by
every 360 deg. I have the old style in my Onan and it was a bit of a
PITA to install. The new Pertronix units no longer use the magnets.
They read directly off the cam lobes in the distributer. That's why
an older unit would probably be better to use for the Onan.

I figger'd I'd keep my "mouth shut" as a picture is worth a 1000 words." So

Gene,
I bought a third Avion off eBay that had an altercation with a tree. I
bought it because The Blue Streak does not have any awnings on it. I paid
$1200 for it which is less than the main awning. I have gotten a lot of
other Avion specific parts off it too.

I do not have a Pertronix on either of my Onans. But I have been reading all the posts and looking at LOTS of pictures.
(Jump to the bottom line if you are in a hurry.)
There are two basic configurations off modules. With the mounting base down, one has the senor (marked with yellow dot) on the side and one has the sensor on the top. The top sensor module is slightly easier to mount on the Onan. (You mount it upside down.) The 1181 for GM products is a top sensor. Most others have side sensor modules like the 1281 Ford unit.

We only need the module and ONE magnet. Pertronix does sell just the modules (with bracket) as replacements for their kits. They normally cost almost as much as the kits.
Rob noted "The new Pertronix units no longer use the magnets.
They read directly off the cam lobes in the distributer. That's why an older unit would probably be better to use for the Onan."
I also noticed that some of the brackets used to mount the modules block some of the cooling air flow. How much does this matter? Probably not much, but I would like to avoid it.
Bottom line:
Even though the GM unit (1181) appears slightly easier to install, the best unit to upgrade our Onans, is the cheapest magnet based (Hall effect) unit you can find.

Robert, so you used the V-dub kit? What did you make the bracket out of? I really like the install looks clean. Also what is the optimum timing advance to set on the Onan?
