Turns out my attempt at timing the engine was pretty much right on. Found a shop here in Houston that has experience with GMC motorhomes. They say I have burned valves and/or a flat cam. This makes me glad I did not just say, "Oh well", and take off for Bean Station as I had hoped. Also, validates not driving it to Montgomery. Question now is "Now what?" I am going to have a pair of "J" heads checked out, then let the shop change them as it is already too hot for me to do much herein Houston.
It is gonna be a heck of a buy after this problem is fixed-new windshields($1000), trans repaired($750), Paterson carbuerator($300), aluminum manifold($600), but it is not available right now. Gotta get it fixed first.

I would do a compression test and a leak down test before putting money into the heads...
You may be looking at a total engine rebuild.
