[GMCnet] I keep blowing out my compressor outlet hose! [message #82977] |

Relative Newbie here (1 year), looking for advice!
When I bought my coach last year, it had a blown air bag, but it came with all required repair parts and the "threaded rod" in place for transport. I installed the new bag and valve, The system pumped up, and not knowing how long to leave it on or how high it would go, I left it on until the red hose coming out of the second stage of the compressor blew open (I assumed from compressor heat). Fortunately, the check valves kept the system pumped up, and I replaced it (with 160 psi rated ice maker hose and brass compression fittings). Now, whenever I'm warming it up and running the compressor, and I get sidetracked for a bit, it blows that hose (after about 5 minutes or so). I've blown and replaced it about 4 times now.
Now, I figure I've got a stuck pressure relief valve somewhere, since it doesn't seem like GMC would build it without a fail-safe. I've considered replacing it with a run of copper, or a 3000 psi flared hose I have left over frome some equipment I used to work on, but I figure it will just blow at the next weakest point. Can anyone shed any light on this dilemna?
It always blows close to the pump head where it is hottest. I've also considered the possibility that the first hose was 33 years old and the ice machine hose, though 160 psi rated, loses integrity when hot.

Glenn,
I know you will get lots of responses on this one but I'll start. There is supposed to be a limit switch on the air system that will shut the compressor off when it reaches the maximum pressure - about 125lbs. Apparently that is not working - either broken or out of adjustment. The hoses and fittings in the system are DOT specified for use on air brakes. You should be replacing things with the proper materials for safety's sake. All of these parts are available from one of our suppliers - Jim K at Applied GMC or Jim Bounds at the GMC Coop and others.

Does your coach have the original compressor or has it been replaced? There should be a pressure switch that shuts off the compressor when a certain pressure is reached. Removing the cover will reveal a spring loaded switch, and it should be adjustable to turn off the compressor when the correct pressure is reached. Mine seems to shut off at ~140 psi.

Glenn, Glenn here.
The compressor should shut off well before any hose blows. Follow the hose
from the compressor. First stop should be a pressure shut off switch. My
'73 has it mounted on the frame of the radiator, drivers side. Yours could
be busted, disconnected, or even missing.

Sir: just a thought... compressed air is hot. 160* icemaker tubing might not be enouch. Maybe go to a big truck parts store and get the real airlines like going to the airbag. There is a difference.
