GMC Land Speed Record [message #82925] |

I haven't heard anything lately about a GMC going for the Land Speed Record. Does anyone here know if there is any current serious effort? Man! I'd love to do this!

Interesting story. The first time out, they took the record without
ever shifting into High gear.
The second time out, they beat the old record with an engine that blew
before they crossed the marker. Not bad for a "coaster".

The drawback to doing this is building a qualified roll cage in the
cockpit. It pretty much ruins the interior.
Having said all this, If Jim Kanomata would just invest a little more
in his coach, pull all the parts and cores out of it, I'd be glad to
drive it on the salt flats.

Steve,
I'll bet that Jim's Twin Turbo Caddy 500 could go faster than 102.6 mph WITH
all the interior in it!
From what I hear he doesn't need you to drive it! His right foot is pretty
heavy!
By the way I know where there's a GMC with a turbo charged, intercooled 455!
Don't know if it's for sale or not though.

I'd love to build a turbo engine. I just hate the thought of having
to go to EFI though. Just so many retrofit problems. I've got the
502 on Craig's list. Decided to give up on the idea of using it in a
GMC or my '55 Chev. I kept the compression at 8.5 so it will work in
just about any application.

We buried some cash into the RV Buddies coach this year so we might
plan on something later with the other GMC repair shops.
We need to get someone to donate a rule book and coach us on what we
need to do .
I heard that the faster you want to go, more item must be installed on
the coach.
The power is needed to accelerate the coach quickly.
Our coaches can go 95-110mph given enough time and space.
The altitude at the salt flats must be around 4,000ft.
I know I would need to drop my 3.70 final and go for 3.07

Keep in mind there are several different levels of land speed racing requiring different levels of equipment. I read some of the rules a few years ago and seem to remember that roll bars where NOT required for our projected speed. (Less than 150mph or so.) But that was just rules for the racing association that I found at that time.
Another idea would be a dry lake bed. Isn't there clubs who do run's on dry lakes in California? Combined rally?
I think that to qualify as a "motorhome" land speed record, the driver (at least) would have to "live" in it for a specified time. Say, something like... 24 hours before and after the run.
I would like to see what speeds could be clocked by a basically stock GMC. It has got to be 95 to 100 mph.

Mike,
I agree with you 150% vis-à-vis the driver living in it!
Moe, (that's what Dyno Sources called their GMC) was a gutted Transmode NOT
a motorhome!!!
IIRC the last time this subject came up on the GMCnet somebody piped up that
they had gotten a speeding ticket for doing over 100 mph in their 8.1 Vortec
or a Big Block Chevy powered GMC.

I knew that coach, I helped them find and procure it. it had been a command center for the Tamps Fl. Fire Dept. We found it down in the keys and i drove down with a Dyno Sources mechanic to retrieve it. Of course they never talked about that! OK, I'll stop but Rob was right, it was a stripped down Transmode, never had a motorhome inside and my guess is the thing was not even close to it's limit at the record it set. Heck, I think Kerry T. has a copy of a ticket going 110 MPH towing his Saturn! Ditting to 62 MPH in 1/4 mile (our record at the drag race rally) there is no problem getting up to speed with a normally asperated 455 and from there I see no problem given a few considerations to spool a GMC right on up there. The problem is not doing the speed, the problem is assembling the time and bucks to go out there, jump through the hoops and get the sheepskin. It costs money to sit out there, bake your brain and wait in line--- get through
the safety inspection and make consecutive runs back and forth to make it official. That is the holdback in my mind. Heck, I had my "dumpster" coach at 95 MPH on a flat road in the middle of the night in Texas coming back from Mariposa with a flat bed trailer on the back! Yes, that was stupid but I was never one to let that stop me! The GMC can easily be a speed monster, we are doing things today with the motors that would crank our coach right down ti China if the body parts would do it. I had a page on my site for a long time fueliing the creative juices and when someone took the challenge even though it was someone who screwed me I was proud that the record was made. I would love to be more first person involved in a run myself, I guess saying i pushed others to do it will be my epitaph though.
Hey, is there someone out there that wants to sponsor a run? You know we can do it!
