Hi,
We're planning on leaving Ellensburg, WA for the Western States meeting in Auburn, CA starting May 19. We'll be leaving 9 days early. Plenty of time to sightsee. Right now we're planning on heading to Lincoln City, OR then down the coast (Hiway 101) through the Redwoods then eventually Auburn, CA.
We're particularly concerned about staying away from too many hills. We're also planning on returning by Ashland, OR for the Shakespeare festival. Ideas for that route (Hiway 5) also requested.
Any suggestions on where to stay & things to see on the way down (& back up)?
We did domething similar when we went to Santa Rosa, but didn't have much time. This time we plan to do it slower.
We prefer to NOT dry-camp as our refer is electric only (110v/12 v)

Hey Ernie;
There's Florence for food and sightseeing (ask GeneF), then Coos
Bay for dunes and the Casino (good buffet), then Banning, Bandon,
Cresent City. Orick Beach for just a neat day of looking at the ocean
along the road (suncks that you can't spend the night there anymore,
then on to Eureka and Redway. There is a really neat little campground
by the Redwood Trail close to the Eel river in Redway that I could
point you two. Very small, but belongs to a friend of mine. After
that, your getting close to Santa Rosa. We always come back I5 to 97,
so can't help you much there.

Eddie, the Premier Resorts in Lincoln City, OR and Redding, CA are super RV
parks. Not too expensive in '08 when the one in Lincoln City had just
opened in early May. All the OR state parks along the coastal route are
beautiful and reasonably priced. Valley of the Rogue State Park in OR is
very nice, just north of CA border. We don't dry camp either.
You should have a wonderful trip.

We toured the Oregon coast in a Vanagon in 2003, a few months before we bought the GMC. We stayed at an RV park in Pacific City, which was gorgeous in every way. I've looked at Google Maps to find it, and it looks as though things have been "improved", but the place that it is in that spot is called the Cape Kiwanda RV Park.

I would agree with Rick. It's a beautiful area. Bob and I have been there
about three times. If you get there are the right time, you may see the
Dory fleet being launched and coming back in after a day of fishing--it's a
real hoot!. Also, there is a brewery right on the beach overlooking that
rock in the water--good food and interesting brewskies and it's fun to watch
the surfers. We didn't camp, but you can't go wrong spending a night or two
there. The Tillamook air museum is nearby. In Garibaldi, be sure to eat at
the nice restaurant just north of town on the west side of the highway,
overlooking the sound (can't remember the name). A great area to visit.
