Ken,
Quiet! Seriously, periods of "quiet time" during the day have helped me. If
you work in a noisy atmosphere, step outside occasionally. Turn down the TV,
lessen the volume on the telephone, tune out your wife. (couldn't resist,
scratch that last one) . Otherwise, Doc says it's something most of us have
to live with. Other's have thoughts?

John:
My various doctors have told me there is not cure for ringing in the ears (tinnitus). I have just lived with it for about 60 + years.

John,
Don't bother stepping outside. Get good ear plugs and use them. If you can't manage plugs, spend the money on 28+dB earmuffs and if people you work with don't like it tell them to write to you in about 10 years. They will have to write because a phone call will be out of the question. If you don't have tinnitus yet, there is still hope.
Fatigue deafness is cumulative and can express itself as either a hearing loss or tinnitus or sometimes both. It may seem like your hearing returns when you are out of the noise, but the damage to the system is permanent when the little tuned hairs in the cochlea get broken off.
I was aware of this from a very early age because most of the old codgers (really old - like Over 40) were deaf from working around ship's engines. I even took care to protect my hearing early on, but those big engines about grab you by the shoulders and shake you for the entire watch.
I have been told that there is a clinic in Israel that has a treatment that is largely successful, but first you have to get there.
And the Ring goes no. . .

My ears started ringing about 4 years ago. The toughest times are when it's quiet in the house. I've tried everything....
My ENT even had me try a script of Sertraline. Supposedly it helps the brain de-focus on the missing information. I don't remember if it worked or not because I de-focused on everything. That stuff made me not care about anything. All I did for a couple of weeks was lay around. When people started to notice a big change in me I stopped the meds.
I'd rather deal with the ringing than the repercussions of not doing what I needed to do.
