I just got off the phone with Jim Garman. I called to see how he and Marlys
were and about the situation with their coach. Here's what I learned and
want to pass on for clarification.
They were returning from Southland Motorhome where they had more work done
after the Eastern States rally. They were somewhere south of Calhoun on I-75
heading north.
The smoke alarm did sound, which got their attention. When he pulled over to
investigate he saw the smoke coming out from under the bed. Grabbing an
extinguisher, he headed back to the bedroom. Seeing no flames he went
outside and saw flames coming out from behind the rear wheel by the LP tank.
He used his extinguisher but didn't stop the flames. He used another
extinguisher getting the same results. He told Marlys to get belongs out of
the coach.
He called 911 to request a response. He then proceeded to unhook the
Tracker. He got it disconnected and the fire trucks showed up.
The interior was completely gutted. The steering wheel melted and, of
course, the dash and anything plastic. The windows were knocked out. What is
left is a coach with a hole in the roof, missing windows, and no interior.
The halon extinguisher in the refrigerator area didn't go off. It was found
intact today.
The engine wasn't hurt. The six tires are OK and the new airbags (unsafe
things that they are) are in good shape. Transmission probably works. Maybe
even the holding tank.
It is still uncertain as to where the fire started.
The Garman's have insurance to a certain amount. They are undecided about
what to do - replace or just go on to something else more productive like
milking 40 Angus cows. (That's a joke just in case you don't know). Jim
needs to finish the struggle of dealing with insurance at this point before
stopping to assess things.
He said he had the coach like he wanted it including the replacement of new
GMC lettering on Monday. He told Zeb he could remove that lettering and put
it on someone else's coach.
If they decide to forget about another GMC they'll still be welcome to ES
events since being alive and getting to enjoy good company is more important
that the coach. The coach is what draws us together. The good company should
be what keeps us together.
