Great historical film!

This film, originally thought to be from 1905 until David Kiehn with
the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum figured out exactly when it was
shot. From New York trade papers announcing the film showing to the
wet streets from recent heavy rainfall & shadows indicating time of
year & actual weather and conditions on historical record, even when
the cars were registered (he even knows who owned them and when the
plates were issued!).. It was filmed only four days before the Great
California Earthquake of April 18th 1906 and shipped by train to NY
for processing. Amazing, but true!

What's interesting is to see the wide variety of transportation
modes--people on foot, horseback, horse and buggy, automobile, cable car,
electric trolley bus, and bicycle

What do you mean slow!! Those guys were nuts. I have watched it
several times and I have come to the conclusion that most of those
people knew that they were shooting the movie. What do you

Terry,
I reckon it is slow when compared to the frenetic pace of life now-a-days in
the major cities of the world.
I agree with you when one considers the size of movie cameras back in those
days the people MUST have seen it and the cameraman on the "front porch" of
the streetcar as it approached them.

Wow I never realized how much damage that earthquake caused. Always knew it was a big one, but not that bad.
Yea.. were are the GMC's?
One advantage for us Aussies, If GMC's were from 1905, they would be right hand drive!

Many, if not most, US cars were right-hand drive in the early days.
Since very few people in San Fran had earthquake insurance, but
did have FIRE insurance, they set fire to their own property so they
could get it replaced.

The earthquake was bad, but the fire was worse.
My Grandmother was a 5 year old girl, living in the City when the earthquake hit. Her big sister (all of 8 years old) remembered it clearly. One of my favorite stories was this -
It was shortly after Easter in 1906 and their apartment house had been tagged as one that had to be destroyed to prevent the spread of the fire. The family was walking down Market street (the one you see in the video) toward the pier to take a ferry boat to Oakland where some friends were going to put them up. As they walked down the street if a building had not been toppled they would cross the street, or walk in the middle because there were many aftershocks, and if the shell was standing it might fall on you. The streets were so hot from the fires that by the time they reached the pier the soles on my Grandmother and her sister's new Easter shoes had melted. You know how important shoes are to a girl!
An influential merchant persuaded the fire brigade to save his liquor warehouse, as the rest of the block burned to the ground. That's one reason I really like this town - Priorities!
