We are stopping every 30 minutes, for 10 minutes, due to trans. shifting itself into second. It did it first at 60 mph at top, or near top, of Monteagle. We were getting onto 64 there so I let it rest. Worked good for an hour or so, then did it again. So, now after 240 miles we are letting it rest again. I checked the vacuum line and all looks good there. We have about 3,000 miles on this one of Manny's. Any thoughts? We will be parking for the night before long. Trying to get Teri to Savannah so she can grab a few more geocaches for the day.

Is it possible that there's a problem with the detent (passing gear kickdown) system, either with the wiring or the throttle switch?

Make sure the vac hose is not soft and getting sucked flat. Often they look good but that thin wall stuff is too wimpy (now that you have good vacuum it might be causing it)

Ok, thanks. Temps are good. I was able to talk to Jim about 4-5 hours ago but lost connection. We are in Savannah now and hope to make Selmer here in a bit. Had a big detour as the hiway had a sink hole and was closed.
Teri is looking for a cache here in the park. As soon as she finds it we are heading west. It will usually run for an hour before giving me trouble.
Thanks again,
Dan

PS on the vac hose up top and below, also make sure it it straight and not too long as that can cause a kink as well. (ask me how I know)

Thanks everyone. Ken B. called me and gave me some tips. Only 150 miles from home and it is all flat land from here. We will make it alright. Plenty of places to stop if it does it tomorrow.
Parked for the night just south of Henderson.

Some go no where without the Black list. I go no where without the GMC list. Always quick responses on the internet.

Dan, the downshifting is either because of low pressure (low on oil) or vacuum.
In third, all three drums are full of oil even though only the direct
is engaged. If the pump sucks any air, you'll loose third (downshifts
into second).

good post, Manny

these types of problems, are system problems, and they may be caused by ,
oil, pressure, temp. vacuum, mechanical connections, engine, etc.

They don't get better by driving through them. Now that you are home, you
can eliminate possibilities one at a time till you find the answer.

good luck doing the trouble shooting,

and don't forget to smell the roses (ahhh, oil that is)

Full by the dipstick or by the "remove the modulator" check. As I understand it the dipstick can be wrong but the modulator level test is a "for sure" check.

Well, we have only 19 miles to get home. Maybe this will be our last resting of the transmission today. Have done so many geocaches that we only had 2 issues prior to this one, today.
IF you saw my blog then you know I backed the dang thing into a ditch yesterday. You should have seen this thing burn rubber on the front right. I had Teri up on the bumper but that did not help get that wheel back down. Been a fun trip for us. Hope everyone gets to use their GMC this summer.

Dan,

Sorry to hear of you backing into a ditch, you gave me a laugh when you
mentioned below that you had Terry up on the bumper! I'll bet she doesn't
weigh 120 lbs soaking wet! If it happens again I'd suggest YOU get on the
bumper and let her drive it out of the ditch! Better yet get some fat bugger
like me to stand on the bumper! ;-)

Yea, Rob,
It was funny after the guy pulled us out with his Bronco.
Tranny gave us fits the last 20 miles but we made it home. Will pull the line tomorrow and clean it out.

If Terry had rocks in her pockets she couldn't come in at 120 lbs.
Sounds like you've found a way to true tires without taking a trip to

Dan, I would get a pressure gage and measure line pressure. If it is too
low, it will not shift into high. After things cool off, you have a bit
more pressure which may be why it works for a while until it gets up to full
temperature again. Have you had any shuddering pulling away from a dead
stop at a fairly high throttle?
