I just turned over another rock in my recent acquisition and found that the water heater tank is rusted through. I'm hoping not to find many more boulders. I like to dry camp and liked Ray Erspamer's tankless water heater installation. It seems like a better alternative than replacing the existing tank. You don't have to run the generator to get hot water. Are there any updates and/or advice on this?
Thanks,

Yea, but I will have to search for them. Either on my blog, from a couple years back, or on the photo site, I just cant recall.
Our's is used for showers only so it is mounted in the bath, up near the Fantastic Vent.

Glenn, here is a link to it. It vents out the Fantastic Vent, 3 inches away, with fan reversed.

Dan that looks great. I have just two questions:

1.you mentioned it was vented through the fantastic fan but I don't see any lines or vents. Do you just open top of the water heater and it vents to the fantastic fan without any attachments/pipes etc.?

2. What about hot water at the kitchen sink?

Michael, this one is for outside use and came with the curved vent you see on the top of it. The fantastic vent will suck the door shut so I know it pulls plenty to vent the tank 3 inches from the fan. You can not see the 14 inch fan in the picture. It is 3-4 inches from top of the unit. I would not use this with the factory fan. Some do not like the way I have it set up but it works fine for us.
No hotwater for the sink with this setup, shower only. Ray's install does the entire coach.

Glenn, I have pictures of the "plumbing" on the previous entry to my blog. Ray has lots of photos of his install and he uses his for all of his hot water. We can get hot water to wash dishes or make instant coffee by turning the temp all the way up and catching it in a container.

Your next project could be to connect it to your hot water line then you'd
have hot water everywhere.

One caution, be careful of CO in a closed bathroom.

I looked at tankless water heater but went with tri mode 6 gal water heater that fit in were the original heater was. I had to vent the gas heater out the side of the RV and make an easy access to the back of the water heater in case I had to work on the gas. Also the drain for the tank is in the area of the gas heat and you need to replace the anode to keep the corrosion down. I had to replace mine after three years. Probably because I filled it with anti freeze last winter instead of draining it. SO I have engine hot water, electric hot water and gas hot water. Having electric means I always have hot water but do not need to turn on the gas except when dry camping or taking a shower. SInce it hooks up the same as the original water heater except for the gas. As to the gas I just teed off the refrig gas supply line. Just another option. The making of the vent for the heater was the biggest job.

I like the original style hot water tank for the "free" hot water it
provides while driving. I also like the idea of having propane water heating
as an option to avoid running the genset when you are parked for extended
periods.

The tankless water heaters are great in that you don't have to wait, and
I've read comments indicating that they use less propane than the tri-mode
tanks.

I need to replace my original water heater, so I am considering plumbing
both an electric tank and a tankless heater together so that no matter what,
I always have a supply of hot water.

If I feed the tankless heater from the electric tank, will the tankless
heater remain off if the incoming water is hot enough? Will feeding 180°F
water into the tankless unit have any negative longterm effect on it?

Does anyone see any pros or cons to doing this over installing a tri-mode
unit? I have not checked what the tri-mode tank costs, but going with an
electric tank and a tankless heater will cost me +/-$500 .

I don't see any benefits of a dual system over just a tankless heater, I do see 2 negatives:

1. A cost of over $500 for a dual system vs. a tankless for under $200.
2. The space needed for the 2nd electric heater

Considering how little propane a tankless heater uses, I think it would take many years to use $300 worth of propane before the dual system actually became cost effective.

Have a great day !!!
