there are a bunch of Left coast Nubies. I have sort of lost count, and a
bunch of them are Lurkers. You are a Nubie, if you feel like one , (I do,
and I have been at this for over 10 years;>)

I don't know how many were at the GMCMI ( since they don't report anything
about the rally;>) but the rumor is it was more than 10)

there is a lot of FUD factor that goes on here, on the net,and we often
scare off the new folks we want to stay.
*Fear, uncertainty, and doubt* (*FUD*)

A few of us,(the vocal, technical, types) do most of the posting on the
net, and yet, there are 7,000 other owners out there , not on the net. It
is often lost, about ; "what am I getting myself into?" that has always
plagued the new owner.

THERE IS MORE TO GMC LIFE THAN THE GMCnet) - not for me, but for lots of
new folks.

So I am inviting your to come to AUBURN - meet the real folks, ask the
experts, and see what people are doing and using their GMCs for... fun and
learning.

This is where you: find GMC things, find sources, see things, meet GMC
folks, meet each other, it is a real learning experience.

Have you ever looked a (one-name person like "Manny" in the eye?)

I hope you come, and I hope you learn

If a newbie or lurker were to make a decision by what is read here, the impules is to run away, run away.

You folks ( newbies and lurkers ) must remember that most people won't post unless they are looking for help.

Since there are so many GMCs still exisiting, at least a 1000 or so on the board ( guestimate ) those who have a problem would ( should ) speak up for information.

Very occasionally do reports of a great trip get written on the board with no problems, not that this does not happen, but that with no problems you just enjoy the ride.

We don't always talk about the GMC having a very comfortable ride, much like a car, smooth and comfortable, ( this would be unlike the old RV I had built on a truck chasis and rode like a , well, truck.)

The GMC handles and maneuvers like a car, well a large car, has low floor level, ceiling height, etc, etc.

OK, ok, I have had some very nice trips heading South from Chicago to Orlando Florida ( Disney ). Every trip has been great with very few surprises. ( of course there was one trip where I had a heater hose go bad but was a quick fix ).

Just remember, these boards are open and welcome Newbies and lurkers but unless you ask, the content may be more toward maintenance or repair rather than Great trouble free trips.

LarC ( recalling when I first found this board and read all the posts of trouble. I too wondered "What did I get myself into". Now that I know the machine, I am glad I got rid of the old RV)

Gene,
There were 17 IIRC and I got a hoot our of Druber's welcome speech
when he told them that by the time the old timers got done speaking
to them, they'd be afraid to drive their coaches home. We need to
think about a different angle for tech talk maybe.

Not even a Nubie yet, still a wannabe, I wish we could encourage more folks to post even a short simple note or paragraph about their trips.

OK,

We left Americus at 0900 and joined up with Jerry & Audrey Holloway at the
Griffin, GA Walmart where we filled up with $2.659 gas. The GMC was
running great and I did a VE Learn to update the Dynamic EFI EBL Flash
memory with what the computer had learned during the 100 mile drive from
Americus.

95 trouble-free miles, including hi-balling it through Atlanta in the I-75
HOV lane, we were at the GMCES rally in Calhoun, GA.

I was surprised how many had beaten us here: Probably 30 GMCs and a few
SOBs were already here. Alex and Ramona Sirum were immediately behind us as
we pulled into the campground. The coaches continued to stream in all
afternoon. I don't know the count, but I'm sure there are over 40 here now.

You would not believe the supper we had! It was potluck with the BBQ
chicken catered by the campground manager. Probably the best I've ever had,
and I've eaten a LOT of chicken. With all the dishes prepared by the
ladies, and the delicacy-laden dessert table, it was a meal to remember!

After dinner, Byron had everyone tell a little about themselves, their
coaches, etc. With the GMC Alumni having their rally with us, and the 10 or
so newbies -- not members of either club -- we had a lot of interesting
tales. Joe Mondello and his wife, whose name escapes me, told about what a
good trip they had bringing their new GMC from CA to TN (naturally, he
mentioned the fact that he built the engine about 50,000 miles ago for the
PO).

From the publicity, I was expecting a great rally. I'm thinking it will be
GREAT.

Y'All should have come!

Oh yeah, the GMC ran great all the way; never missed a beat. Even the VSS/2
board I built and installed untested seems to be working well -- except
there's a 10% discrepancy between my VDO electronic speedometer and the EBL
What's Up Display (WUD) speed reading, with both of them driven from the
same VSS. I'll worry about that when I get home to my 'scope. During a
long uninterrupted drive like that I was able to learn to better interpret
the displays and correlate them with the performance. I didn't even know
Deceleration Fuel Cut Off (DFCO) was enabled in my EFI -- it is and works,
though perhaps not as much as I'll want to adjust it to. Similarly, I
learned just where Power Enrichment (PE) occurs and even to recognize the
change in engine sound when it begins and ends; it too needs a little
adjustment to come in a little later -- EASY with the EBL Flash upgrade on
my EFI.

Time was, Sunshine Statesmen's and Dixielanders' required current ownership
of a GMC for membership. So when folks who might have been members for 20+
years decided to move to something else, they had to leave the clubs and all
their best friends. Dixielanders changed that 7-8 years ago or more (IIRC I
was president at the time). Sunshine Statesmen didn't make the change for a
long time -- I think they have now.

During that time, Susie & Ron Tase formed the GMC Alumni club for anyone who
has ever owned a GMC. It's mostly a social club and frequently holds joint
rallies with other clubs to increase their opportunities to be with their
old friends. Many of the members still have GMCs.

Ken,

Great report, however, you've left out one thing, how does the Caddy 500
perform vis-à-vis the Olds 455?

I realize you've probably been taking it easy to break it in but whatever
you have noted so far would be interesting.

Have a great time at the rally!

chicken catered by the campground manager.

Similarly, I
learned just where Power Enrichment (PE) occurs and even to recognize the
change in engine sound when it begins and ends; it too needs a little
adjustment to come in a little later -- EASY with the EBL Flash upgrade on
my EFI.

Gene,
6 years ago when we were living in Titusville, FL., we were headed
back from Orlando to Titusville and I saw a large herd of GMCs at an
RV resort just off the BeeLine. That was my first encounter with the
GMC alumni folks. Great bunch of GMCers and those are the coaches to
steal ideas from when they invite you in to look around.

Not much to miss there Gene. We retired, sold out, put everything in
storage and went to FL to stay with her folks. After about a week of
90 yr old folks, "Wheel of Fortune" on volume setting 90, and the
furnace on at 90 deg, we bought a 5th wheel trailer and move in close
to them. It was during this time that the GMC was getting it's face
lift.
I hope someone reports that Duane Simmons made it to the Morrow Bay rally.

It's not listed at bdub; I'll ask tomorrow -- assuming CRS permits.

His SOB. Beaver, IIRC.

Besides him for an experts panel (not scheduled), we have Leigh Harrison and
Joe Mondello!
