I've been going through the TBI wiring harness I got recently, that I'm told came from a 1989 Chevy Silverado 3500.
After much searching, I've determined there is no knock sensor on it. If I can believe the online parts searches,
there was an ESC module made for 7.4 liter engines (to drive the knock sensor), but it's rare and expensive.
Searching through assorted manuals, I find that most if not all 7.4 liter trucks of that era didn't have knock sensors,
though 5.7 liter ones did.
I'm trying to figure out if it's worth adding one in. I believe the ECM (7747) can support it if I add the pin, wiring, ESC module, etc.
So, my question: why did GM put knock sensors on 5.7 liter engines, but not the 7.4??
Perplexed,

I installed a 454 in my coach. I have purchased 3 454 1 ton 454s 89-90 trk motors and they all had the ESC and knock sensor on them. Its good to have on a hot day and a GMC load. It could save your motor.
I had the howell with no knock sen. and was always listing and adjusting the timeing. With the above the ECM will cut you back and save your motor if it starts to pinging. Your call Tim

The few manuals I found at the library showed no knock sensors for any of the 7.4L engines, and noted it as a 5.7-only feature in some diagrams.
I have no idea which models have it and which don't or why, but clearly some do. I was told this tbi/harness did have knock sensor, so it is a real
disappointment to find it doesn't. Guess I'll have to shop around for the right E$C module. I believe it's 16131231, if anybody has one to sell.
thanks,

The 1989 GMC K3500 truck with a 7.4l engine used a knock sensor. It
was AC/Delco 213324.

I've got the knock sensor. It's the Electronic Spark Control Module (ESC) that I'm looking for. They ain't cheap.
I suspect this harness came from a "V" rather than "K" model. Just guessing from the lack of knock sensor and other
harness color details.
