Hey guys,
I don't post a lot here, but I've been playing along at home...
Anyway, I managed to back up and catch a large piece of wood that has bent
my 73 455's y-pipe. Now I have a huge exhaust leak at the donut gasket to
the left manifold. Is the y-pipe a stock part that I can just go purchase?
Or does it have to be made at this point?
I know that a lot of you are going to say, that it's a good time to convert
to headers. I'd agree, but my wallet doesn't. There is a leak/crack from the
left manifold, which is even more reason to do so. However, I'm guessing
headers are going to be at least 5 times more expensive than just replacing
the y-pipe.
Thank you,
Eddie Pettit

Eddie,
Welcome aboard.
Jim Kanomata 1-800-752-7502 can probably help you here. He has
nearly every configuration of exhaust pipe there is for GMCs. You may
well find that one, or both of your original mufflers are plugged with
pieces of themselves as they desintegrated over time. This could be
part of the reason you have a cracked exhaust manifold (heat) and you
will probably find that your intake is beginning to crack also (in the
floor under the carb).

he also runs with no muffler at all
could be an option

I understand Jim also has turbos. Turbos cut the sound level (with restriction) and combined with a long pipe out the rear, MIGHT be quiet enough so "the man" doesn't notice.
Eddie,
Even with headers you would need some kind of Y pipe. Unless you try and do some kind of dual system... not recommended.

I just went through this over the last week. I was completely unable to find an off-the-shelf y pipe to put on my new headers. Had a muffler shop that came highly recommended make one up. I also called Jeff at Alex Sirum and he said he could ship a Y pipe out to me same day if necessary and, as many have said, I know Jim K can help you out as well. In the end, it seemed easier to get it done locally just in case I needed to make some modifications to get it all to fit right.

We do help lot of people on low budget solve problems.
We have aluminized pipe system as well as the SS systems.
All mandrel bent, no kinks like the muffler shop units.

Thanks for the responses guys, I was kind of looking for the stock OEM one
piece y-pipe. As many of you have stated, it could certainly be done
piecemeal, which I hadn't considered. I merely considered unbolting what was
there and bolting up a new one.

Leigh Harrison also has a stock replacement exhaust system. It does have 3" pipe out the back. It replaces the OEM system, and is an easy install with a little help from your friends.
designed to use the original iron exhaust manifolds. Aluminized Steel pipe. Check his web site.
the fact that he is located about 10 miles from the house helped with the decision making process.
Tom Phipps,
