One of the main reasons I'm able to maintain and modify my GMC (content) is
that the owner of the local machine/welding shop is a friend. He does
anything I ask almost immediately and extremely well, at little or no cost,
even for materials. They even include me in the frequent Friday fish fries,
steak BBQ's, etc.
When I stopped by the shop this morning to tell them not to worry about me
harassing them for the next couple of weeks, he wanted to know why. When I
told him we're going to Tennessee, he had a request: He wants a CD or two
of bluegrass gospel music with LOTS of banjos. Seemed to think TN was the
right place to get such, even after I told him it's not Arkansas.
I really need to do something nice for him -- like find a couple of good
CD's for him. Can anyone recommend sources and/or titles -- I know nothing
except "Dueling Banjos".
TIA,
Ken H.

Ken, Do you want older established or newer upcoming type artists?
IE: Does this guy already have a pretty extensive collection?

Steve Martin's album is great. Some of his original work is tremendous -
lyrics as well as the music.
Bluegrass Gospel -- I'll have to think on that one. Wait, no I won't. There
a group called The Bluegrass Gospel Group and they have a new album called
Bluegrass Favorites.

That's a good one for sure.
When Earl and Ricky Skaggs got together one time there was some righteous
picking going on.
Really, I was trying to think of two CDs the guy may not have in his
collection just yet. For sure, Ken has some suggestions.

Ken,
If you find the "Earl Scruggs Review live at Austin City Limits",
buy two. I will buy one no matter what the cost. All I had was the
LP and it and my turntable went away a lont time ago.

Gary,
A little off post here but when you visited me in your GMC (whew, got
it in there) I remember when your mandola broke. The low humidity
here is murder on wooden instruments. We seldom get above 30% and
wood instruments require about 40% to stay together. The only guitar
I own that is not showing the bad effects of this arid climate is my
cheap (chinese made) Silvertone. Fortunately, the Chinese use lots of
laquer on their wooden stuff and that is why (according to our local
expert). When you get it back, get a good case and Dampit string.

If it were Blues, I would be able to help. I have very little Bluegrass. Another option is a file sharing program called FrostWire. Just be careful not to download anything that doesn't show a bitrate or is obviously too small to be a song. Only download mp3 format songs & you should be OK. It may take a few days to find what you want. Also, if you get the names of artists you want, check to see if they have websites. Most sell directly from them with no hunting around. E-Bay is also a good option. I have used all of these sources at one time or another, leaving FrostWire as a last resort. Richard & Carol Brown

x2 on Ralph Stanley or Earl Scruggs. Traditional bluegrass.
Del McCoury band for a little more modern take.
If your pal is under 60, and has a sense of humor---Hayseed Dixie. They do bluegrass covers of AC/DC, Kiss and other rock bands.
oops, sorry---I reread he likes gospel bluegrass....hmm..... There's a local group to me called Chigger Hill that's a good fit. They have a disc or two out. Very talented grup of musicians, and the girl singer sounds a lot like Allison Krause. I know their (former) banjo player--a 17 yr old near-virtuoso. Good stuff.

Ken,
Just confirming the opinion of many, one of the guys in my career reinvention class is a 30+ year minister, and a double platinum award winning inspirational music producer in his spare time. I asked him this morning, and he said, Ricky Scaggs is as good as it gets for inspirational bluegrass.
