Hi all I have 1978... alternator has bad squeal at higher rpm's so bad
bearings.

SO buddy here works and NAPA and we are wondering which is best to get? 80
amp or 100 amp? then what model number or brand manufacture. he showed me a
few to chose from.

I see a NAPA part number 213-4505 for 100 amp one is that ok? best to get?

get your old one rebuilt from a local electrical rebuilder.

the ones from Napa, never have the stator winding replaced, and they need to
be replaced,

A few ways you can go.

1. Rebuilt your own. It does not take much to clean it up replace the slip ring brushes and bearings.

2. Take yours to a local rebuilder and have him do the same as above.

3. Get a rebuilt from one of the National chains. Most offer a lifetime warranty. Do not use NAPA because they will not honor their warranty without the original receipt and you must take it to the store where you bought it. That is not much good unless it fails within a very close distance to home.

I have real good luck with rebuilt alternators from AutoZone. I have installed 4 of them on 4 different vehicles (a 1996, a 1998 a 1999, and the GMC). I have a total of 320,000 miles on those 4 vehicles. None of them have ever failed. I wish the OEM alternators lasted that long.

4. You can buy a new one. AZ has them and they are not that much more expensive that the lifetime rebuilts. Most of the new ones are are built by Johnson Controls.

I should note that Jim Kanomata also sells a new one. I do not know the manufacturer on his, but you know the warranty is good just like everything else he sells and you know you will get the correct one on the first try.

If I were doing items 3 or 4 above, I would get the 100 amp version.

I would also install the double pulley on nay alternator while it is off of the coach. It only takes a minute to do it and you can do to the double belt at a later date if desired.

Sir" you might try some belt dressing and see if the squeal goes away. Might just be the belt, If not I`d replace the belts when replacing the alternator. Good Luck....

new bearings don't cost too much. When I lived in California the local Pick a Part had a big sale on alternators a couple times a year. At that time they were $5 or $10 each plus a core. I picked up 2 out of around 1980 Cadillacs one to install on the coach and a spare to store behind the bathroom lower cabinet. Yeah I did need the spare one time and I repaired the other when I got home. The 100 amp looks exactly like the original except the numbers on the housing has 100 in it rather then 80. Most of the older GM alternators that I have repaired needed a new dio treo or the internal regulator. You know what a noisy bearing sounds like and they aren't hard to change either.

Wilson electrical items are handled by most NAPA stores, at least they used to be, haven't checked lately. Have used many of these for ag use, excellent rebuilds and service.

My parts guy told me that the shops like to use Nippondenso rebuilt A/C compressors because they use the case and replace all the internal components. He said that he suspects they do the same on starters and alternators. I recently replaced the starter on my Jeep Cherokee with a Nippondenso unit and was impressed with the apparent quality. I haven't had it on for long enough to really vouch for it, but it looked really good.

Mike,

Have you checked to see the size of your old alternator? You might have a 140 amp as I believe that was an option on the 78's.

for 100 amp one is that ok? best to get?

The size of the alternator, is not really critical. 4 hours of driving ( a
typical road trip) will bring up any of our battery systems. I don't know
of many GMCers that run the 455, to charge their batteries.

The batteries will only take the current they need, and it is only at the
beginning of a charge that they will take a large in-rush of current, so
current, after the first few minutes of charge is limited by the batteries.
If you have several banks of batteries, you could use more current.

this graph shows a 55 A smart charger only needs 4 hours in the BOOST
(ALTERNATOR MODE) , and then it has the battery at the 90 percent level, and
it goes into a maintain mode.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=17534&cat=4507

Remember, the bearings go bad, sometimes the electronics go bad, but the
silent (intermittent) killer of alternators are the stator winding inside
the case of the alternator. If you look at the old one, you probably will
find it is toasted.

Squeal could be from loose or worn belt. Try tightening belt and see if
squeal stops.
