Our stove has pilot lights. The are a pain. I was told by a GMC friend, that you can turn the oven knob to a no pilot position. I looked, and sure enough, it is even written on the knob.

I have pushed, pulled and twisted to no avail. I have taken the knob off and with pliers pushed, pulled, twisted and murmured under my breath.

What's the secret? Wrong knob and mine doesn't turn off?

What is the work around?

After you turn it to the 'Pilot Off' position, have a beer while the gas in
the line burns off.....??

George,
Don't think that this is an insult, but are you sure you are turning the knob the Correct way (notice he didn't say right)?

On our Magic Chef, the "Pilot Off" position is to the left and very near the "Oven Off" position. The intuitive move would say go from "Oven Off" to the near by "Pilot Off". . . . .
- Well, that's nice, but I have to go All the Way Around to the the other way (to the right as I recall) to get to the "Pilot Off".

This has never cause me any frustration or consternation (Sure..).

Matt

Well, there it is. Duh! Reminds me of the Far Side where the kid is trying to open the door to a gifted classroom by pushing and the sign says, "Pull to Open".

Matt, if Saturday was an award day, I am sure you would be up for Honorable Mention if not one of the coveted "Smart Guy" awards. Unfortunately, Saturday is not an award day, but you are a hero in my book. So simple.

I think I will go out and lean on the door some more.

Since we're on the subject (or within spitting distance) how do you light the oven pilot? Is there a separate gas cut off, because I never hear or smell gas in the oven (don't worry, I haven't decided to GIVE UP on my GMC the hard way! I just want to cook some biscuits).

I had been lighting mine (to keep the smell of propane down) with a long propane lighter thingy. On ours it is on the right back of the burner. Of course, I realize that now that I have the pilots off, I will have to turn the oven to off to light the pilot. (Sort of like a Windows computer where you have to go to Start to stop.) I suppose that means that when the oven is on, I still need to light the stove pilot. I need a plug for that puppy.

Randy,
I can only offer guidance for the Coleman (I mis-spoke/wrote in prior post). Magic Chef was one or more RVs ago.

With ours the oven/broiler pilot is under the dividing shelf about half-way back. A long stick lighter is a help. I usually pry up the stove top and light a back burner. (This proves that we have gas and I remembered to turn it on. We shut it off when underway - Old habit.) Then turn the knob to "Oven Off". Sometimes the pilot will light itself from the burner, but once you get it to hold a flame, then grovel on the floor and look up at the burner assembly so you can see and light where the pilot is.

George

Are you pushing in on the knob when trying to turn it from off to no
pilot?

I still have my original Magic Chef stove in the garage. I went out
to check it and if I push in on the knob and turn it clockwise it
easily moves from off to no pilot.
