Hi Everyone,
Just taking a minute to introduce myself.
Last Fall I bought a 73 GMC from a Greatlaker named Bill Armstrong. Some may remember the coach as it has a completely custom interior made of birch and finished in wood tones. Bill was a cabinet maker by trade so the woodwork is wonderful.
The coach still needs a lot of work on the exterior. I plan to repaint it in the next month or so.
The chassis seems to be OK. I can see the rear frame rails are rusty and expect to do that job in the fall.
Overall the engine is in good running order and fires everytime I turn the Key. Trans Shifts fine. Brakes look and feel good.
The biggest driveability issue is that the coach shakes like crazy up to about 45-50 mph. To solve the issue, the current project is to replace the 16.5 bias ply's with 16" Eagles and Michelins. I should have that sorted out by the end of the week.
Next on the list is shocks. KYB's are on the way.
That's where I'm at for now.
Regards,
Ken Wolkens

Welcome to the Jungle! You should find a lot of advice and comradery on the list, and will quickly find that it's best to get advice before laying out dollars. I've been working on my coach for two years now, and still have lots of things that I need to get advice on (and that's after working on sportscars for the past 30 years!).
Enjoy your project in good health!

Ken,
Welcome aboard! We're looking forward to participating in your GMC
experiences.
You're on the right track to cure your shakes -- anything else would be only
a stopgap and very likely unsuccessful. When you mount the new tires on the
Eagles, I'd suggest throwing a 4 oz. bag of Counteract (or Equal, or
similar) into each of them so they'll balance themselves now and
forevermore. Without paying for more balancing.

Yes, it clearly could be the wheels or tires but you should also check
the axles bolts where they bolt to the final drive. It could also be
CV joints in the axles.

The magic Counteract is exactly what Tom Hampton put in my 16.5"
Firestone wagon wheels and my coach runs well.

Thanks for the tips and the offers!
I'll look for the magic balancing packs over the next couple of days.
I did manage to get my first Eagle Wheel today and I tried it on the Coach. Fits perfect so I'm going to order the rest tomorrow. They should be in on Thursday.
Also the UPS guy dropped off the new KYB's today so it looks like I'll have plenty to do this weekend.

Your 16.5 bias ply tires are probably nylon cord & they flat spot overnight. They will shake bad the next day till they warm up. BTDT.
