Has anyone installed one of the new portable inverter generators such as the
Honda 3000 in their GMC?

I have not seen that one installed. Apparently Onan has a 2.8 that they say will run one 15k air conditioner with 600 left for other use. I don't know the details but have a friend that is installing one now.

I have that unit, the 2800, and you can tell your friend it works quite
well. The only advantage to the Honda would be its quietness.

Mine was installed with the internal muffler and the exhaust exiting out a
rear bottom corner making it difficult to remove the unit for service. Tell
your friend that there is a variation that brings the exhaust out the right
front making service easier. That unit has an external muffler.

Thanks, Glenn

That friend is me. The Onan we are talking about is an Onan Camp Power
2800w. My muffler is an external Onan muffler and it exits out the bottom
and points towards the rear of the coach. I'll take some pictures of the
set up for my daughter's 23 foot coach when I get it installed later this
weekend. I also put a fan in the rear of the generator compartment to
pull air into the compartment; it is similar to the one Ken H talked about
today. I'll get Dan Gregg to help me get the photo's up on the GMC photo
site.

I did have some problems with this unit. I bought it in September of
2007; just now got around to installing it. Of course, the warranty is
only good for one, two or three years from delivery date. One year on
electrical components, two years on something else, and 3 years on the
motor and generator parts. I tried to start the unit yesterday and when
it first fired, I saw a spark inside the unit. A fuse was blown. Put a
new fuse in and tried to start it again. It wouldn't start and the starter
wouldn't stop spinning the motor. Had to remove the start wire from the
stud there in the compartment. The start/stop switch would not work, so
pulled the unit yesterday and drove 25 miles to an official Onan repair
shop. They called Onan and Onan told them the warranty had run out, even
tho the unit was still new and un run. They called me later in the day
saying the control board was fried; it would be $180 for a new one. Having
no choice, I said go ahead and repair it and I'll deal with Onan down the
road. They just called me an hour ago and told me there was a wire that
got pinched somehow and it had shorted, blowing the fuse, but the control
board was OK. I will go pick up the unit later today and install it
tomorrow.

When I open the front hatch on the passenger side, there is a black vertical vent box which seemingly draws air from the cabin area above the passenger's feet, and exhausts up near the windshield, in front of the passenger.

There is a vacuum actuator on it, and (if it worked), it would seem that it could open and close some sort of internal door.

There does not seem to be any sort of blower that would cause this vent to work.

What does this vent do, and how does it work ?

Hi Gerald. Boy I wish you hadn't said all that. Kinda goes along with the
Onan rep. Hope mine hangs in better but I did have to pull it out and
re-screw the control module to the bottom of the case. it had come loose
and knocked the primary lead off the coil. Other than hard starting after a
period of disuse it has been OK. But the Honda still beckons.
