A non-GMCNet buddy is going tomorrow to collect the 425+3.21 we've been
watching for a couple of years. He's a retired Delta mechanic, has had
several GMC's, helped me install the front clip in the X-PB and recover it
from TN, helped me install the Cad, etc., etc., etc. So he's no amateur --
just never done a 3.21 before, nor have I.
So, it's time to gather all the details we need to know about installing it
in his GMC. I've got only sketchy recollections:
1. The cover gasket's no longer available so we'll need to make one or RTV
it. Right?
2. There is a gasket between the transmission & FD that IS still available
-- Anyone have a P/N?
3. The output shaft is unique (and is with unit he's buying), and the seal
for it's no longer available. A sleeve must be applied or a seal just
identified by Larry Weidner used -- I can't find Larry's posting -- Someone
please tell us what we need.
4. There was some mention somewhere about the output shaft and the idler
bearing -- what's that all about?
5. Any other details we need to know?
TIA,
Ken H.

Ken: I found this note from Larry:
RH drive axle seal. It is a seal that is non-standard and NOT specifically
designed for use in the 3.21 as an axle seal. It is NAPA part #13739. The
original seal for the 3.21 is no longer available, and this seal works
without having to sleeve the shaft in order to use the 3.07 seal.

AFIK YES BUT MANNY MIGHT HAVE SOME! HE DOES HAVE SOME ALUMINUM RAGUSA COVERS
FOR THE 3.21.
2. There is a gasket between the transmission & FD that IS still available

I THINK IT'S THE SAME AS THE 3.07 SEE PICTURES BELOW:

CHUCK BOYD HAS PROVIDED THAT INFO.

THE OUTPUT SHAFT AND IDLER BEARING MOUNT BRACKET ON A CADDY 500 IS DIFFERENT
FROM THE ONE ON AN OLDS 455. THE CADDY BRACKET IS "SLANTED" AND THE OLDS
BRACKET STRAIGHT.

Ken, I just went through all of this 2 months ago. We need a FAQ for this that is easy to find.
The gasket for the FD to the Tranny is the same as the 3.07. They are easily avail. $11 If I recall. I think it is a bit thin, however.
If you make a cover gasket, make it thick. the thin stuff is leaking on my FD and I need to redo it. I may RTV it.It is leaking 90 wt all over my new tranny pan!!!
Manny is the man for the shaft. He will ship you a shaft with a new bearing and spacer ring all ready pressed on, plus he has a double seal that fits that. The unit he ships is nice and clean, and repainted. His Price is unbeatable! You will need to send him both of your old shafts. (Which reminds me, I still need to do that!).

Thanks, Chris, we'll use that information.
I agree that we need a FAQ area for such things. Seems to me we started one
some time ago, but I don't recall where it was nor whether anyone's still
using it. For the GMCMH-EFI Google Group, we've just started using one of
the nice features of Google Groups: An area where pages can be created for
permanent display and editing. We're posting "Tips" and "Tweaks" in a
Wiki-style format so that we can preserve and easily locate recurring
topics. Sure wish we had an easily accessible archive of all the marvelous
information that's been repeatedly posted and repeated and repeated and
repeated here over the years -- like how to install a 3.21 final drive. :-)

Ken,
I have a 3.21 FD in Houston that I intend to open up, clean, inspect; and if
it is in good shape I will take it to the COOP to install in Double Trouble
in July. I will take step by step pictures and write instructions if I do
install it.

The Nose Backet for the 3.21 is different than the 3.07, and must be
from a 66 or 67 Toronado.

Chuck,
That's a point I didn't remember, if I've ever seen it. And it may pose a
problem because the 425+3.21 have been sitting under a junkyard shelter for
years; the bracket may well be missing.
Does anyone have an alternative to suggest?

Ken,
Not saying that it's the best way, but there are sure a lot of final
drives out there that don't have bolts in the nose mounting. I drove
mine around for 5-6 years that way with no problems that I'm aware of.

Steve,
Because I don't have any alternative without R&R my custom front mount,
that's the way I'm going to run the Cad, at least for a while. Not sure
Jerry Holloway will want to leave his 3.21 "loose" though. :-)

Ken,
Just drill the hole in the 3:21 out to the same size as the later
FD and
use the later mounting bracket. Personally, I weld the nut on
the inside
to make it easier for a one-man operation. JWID

Uhhhhh..... no.
I had originally powder coated that bracket and the front
motor mount. When putting it together, I remembered
what a PITA trying to hold the nut and start the bolt was.
So I just grabbed another bracket, welded the nut fast and
gave it a quick spray-paint job and installed it. I now use
a long extension and the impact to R&R the bolt. JWID
