I'm now pretty sure that Money Pit's fuel pump is
leaking as I smell raw gasoline almost constantly.

Does anybody have a part number and favorite
source for same?

Mac,

Napa = M-6108
AC = 41566
Borg Warner = 40713
Carter = M6108

I would recommend you join the GMCMI; as part of the membership package you
will get a copy of the Parts Interchange Index which is where I got these
numbers.

You want the M6108 (OEM part #) fuel pump. Airtex was a popular
brand. You can use the M6109 pump but it has a return line that need
to go back to the fuel tank.

This is available from Autozone

Mac,
Smelling Gasoline in a GMC is quite common.
Generally right after filling the tanks and often every time you
hit the brakes hard as long as there is fuel in the fill tube.
I attribute this to poor venting. Others will have other opinions.
If you don't see gasoline around your fuel pump the problem
is probably not there. Have you installed an electric pump yet?
Charles

Mac,

Charles has got it right! I found that the vent tube that connects to the
filler neck was dry rotted and porous on Double Trouble and that's where we
got a serious gas odor when filled up. The bad news is that you can't get to
that hose unless you take the drivers side panel off. On the Avion that
panel goes UNDER the panel below the large side window so that has to come
off first. To get that panel off you have to remove the love seat! Jim B
suggested we cut the square part of the drivers side panel that encloses the
filler tube with an air body saw and that's what we did.

I had no luck with the aftermarket suppliers for the fuel pumps. Got a Napa and an Autozone and neither worked right. One had bad threads and one just seized after 20 seconds. I'd stick with a Delco if you can get your hands on it.

About 7 years ago I just went to AutoZone and got one for a 1975 Toronado. I believe it was Airtex part number 40736. I has worked well for 7 years now.

Just make sure you specify "NO Air Conditioning." The one for the Toronado with AC has a return outlet not used on our coaches.

BTDT

Just after I got my '73, the fuel pump started leaking (dripping) onto the ground whenever I turned off the motor. During the replacement I broke the hard fuel line and broke off a thermostat housing bolt.

-- BUT --

Fuel smells can come from several different sources. Cracked and dry fuel and vent lines, non-sealing gas cap and even carburetor leaking into the intake. (Had all of these.) Another big one is the stock exhaust cross-over "boiling" the fuel out of the float bowl. (Still have this one.)

I have that pump too. Have not installed it yet because it has the extra return tube. I haven't checked to see if the GMC has the return line to the tank. does it? (1977 455 with CA emissions)

You need the pump for a Toronado that does NOT have air conditioning. No
return line.
I installed that pump in 05 and it is working fine.

Same here, 1977 with CA emissions and I can definitely say that I couldn't find a return line. There is a feed line and the line from the canisters, that is all. I checked, because the only pump I have to put in is also the 3-tube one - I am actually wondering if tying off the return tube is a legit solution (and whether that is an automatic fail on the smog check).

When we bought our GMC the PO had installed a fuel pump with a return line. He ran it to a fitting welded to the filler pipe. The Caddy motor that we have in now also has a return line that is connected to the filler pipe.
It is my understanding that the return hose is to keep gas moving in the gas line to help stop vaper lock.

The pump with the return line is for a Toronado WITH air condtioning. It's
NOT for a GMC. The NAPA part numbers for the two pumps is only one digit
different.

But that brings up and interesting question in view of the recent spate of
vapor lock problems. Has anyone tried adding a return line, either to the
fuel fill pipe or to one of the tanks, and using that mechanical pump with
the return line? That's undoubtedly why the air conditioned Toronados used
it -- to correct a vapor lock problem.

I was thinking the same thing, as why would Air Conditioning have anything to do with it other than more heat under the hood.

Maybe I will attach to a tee in the vent line up near the filler. Just hafta figure out which one is the innie and which one is the return. The carb output is the easy one here.

It's an interesting thought, but I would think that may work if the vapor lock is occuring before or in the pump but not if the major problem is after the fuel pump.

Might also be of interest to those with an electric pump plumped in series with the mechanical pump.

I confused about the 3 port fuel pumps. If you check any of the parts houses and references, there is never any mention of a 3 port pump for Toronados. When A/C became standard in 1977, the fuel pump was still only the 2 port pump as it appeared to be all the way back to 1973. Where did this with and without A/C thing originate?

Bob,

Methinks we're seeing simplification of inventory for old vehicles. I
repeated your search for the different pumps at my favorite sites (ACDelco &
RockAuto & AZ & NAPA) -- only one 2-port version available at any of them.

Remembering standing at the counter of NAPA in Morristown, TN several years
ago looking at both 2 & 3 port pumps, I searched my GMail archive.

In '07 the following numbers were posted as coming from the then-current
GMCMI Interchange List:
---------------------------------------------------
Napa ( 2 line pump # NFP M-6108 )
AC (455) # 41566
AC (455) has by-pass to gas tank # 41567
Napa ( 3 line pump - for return line) # NFP M-6109
---------------------------------------------------

The current NAPA number is not at all similar to those above. ACDelco no
longer lists a pump for Toronado.

How we associated the 3-port with A/C, I don't recall, but it wasn't
arbitrary.

Someone needing a 3-port pump may be out of luck.
