Hello all,

My name is John Arbuckle I am new to this forum. Nearly a year ago my wife
and I purchased a 1976 palm beach, she is a looker!! I mean the coach. We
have been hackin away at it little by little now since the purchase. The
first task was to replace the sagging headliner. When we removed it there
were a couple dozen dead rodents! So I decided to gut the entire thing to
find the rest of the little critters. The count now I think is in the 30's
or 40's! Well to the point. I need a little advice, I removed the black tank
to replace it due to an indescribable odor which I could not get clean.
Anyway there are four bolt that go through the floor that mount the straps
holding the tank in place. These bolts were impossible to bust loose I had
to cut them off. I need to replace them all except one of them is under the
bath module. How do I move or remove the bath module? How difficult will it
be? And are there any other suggestions on replacing that one bolt? Again I
would appreciate any help you can give. Oh yeah it is a dry side bath.

Thank you John Arbuckle

John,

Welcome to the forum.

On my 73 coach, at the aisle, the toe kick or toe board can be removed with two screws and allows access to the underside of the bathroom module. When I removed the black tank I had to hold the rod hangers with vice grip pliers while I removed the nuts.

Please let me know if this works out -- and come back for other discussions. We need and appreciate everyone's input.

You really don't want to attempt to remove the bath module

If you have the tank down you might be able to thread the remaining
stub of the cut bolts and then buy some threaded couplers and use some
pieces of threaded rod to add more length to them.

I don't think this suggestion applies to John. He said he had a dry
side bath.
I believe the toe board you are referring to is only on the wet baths

John,
You do not want to remove the bath modual unless you absolutly have to.
There is some space between the floor of the shower and the floor of
the coach. You might cut the bolt off flush to the botoom of the floor
and get it out throught this space. After doing this, maybe you can drill
the hole through the floor at an angle and get a long bolt with a large
washer on it through the angled hole and then turn it stright. If this works
be sure and fill the angle portion of the hole so water and mud don't
get in the coach through the hole. You can get access to the space
below the shower from the water tank side. You will need to remove
the water tank and water tank compartment in order to do this.

I agree with Emery. try to thread the remaining stud and thread a jam nut and a threaded standoff to it, then a new piece of all threaded rod cut to the length you need. use the jam nuts to lock the rod and broken bolt to the standoff.

I take it from the discussion that the GMC-fitted coaches have the black
tank suspended from the floor. Coachmen fitted coaches have the tanks
suspended from the frame. Perhaps that's the solution -- put straps under
the tank between frame members.

There would seem to be definite advantages to floor suspension, such as less
movement between the tank and the floor. But the Coachmen technique has
been working fine for me for 11 years, and apparently for many others.

John,

I had a similar issue. To solve no access to the original bolts, I cut them short and then created "J" bolts by cutting some 3/8" threaded rod and bent one end. I hooked these bolts into the oval holes in the chassis cross members. Those holes are not perfect alignment but sufficiently close to work well.

Tony

I like Roberts Holding tank repair. It saves having to take out the tank. I've got the same problem. I attributed it to stress caused by the sharp edge of the tank straps when the tank is full. What is the "doubler" material that you used??
