Yesterday I removed the three 4-5 year old batteries from the right front
tray for replacement. Because of the way I mounted the A/C receiver-dryer
when I redesigned the dash air conditioning, it's no longer feasible to R&R
batteries through the grille, which was a hassle, but do-able.

Now, the batteries must come out through the right front wheel well.
Compounding the problem is the fact that only the inner 8"-9" of my wheel
well liner is easily removable, so the batteries must exit one at a time,
lengthwise, through that small opening. At 50+ pounds each, it proved quite
a chore for a 73 yo to manipulate them through the slot, around the
suspension, and down from above head level.

Anticipating the even greater difficulty of lifting the new batteries back
into place, not just now, but in the even older years ahead, I decided I'd
better devise a mechanical aid. Here it is:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=5425

<http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=5425>I haven't
actually installed a battery with it yet, but I'm very confident it will
work. The movement from the lift onto the tray and into position will still
be a chore -- a temporary platform has to be used to maneuver the batteries
over the fences between the battery compartments because it's too difficult
to reach through the front hatch and lift them into place.

A neat idea! I also had bought a Ragusa three battery tray to mount all the batteries up front, but finally gave up on it due to the difficulty of getting the batteries in and out.

I do use the tray to hold extra oil, antifreeze, etc. in a convenient place, and purchased the extending battery tray from JimK to fit the house batteries in the generator compartment, and have been very satisfied with their performance. It's much easier to get to, service, and replace the house batteries back there.

In a 23', we don't have many choices of battery location. I like mine
except at these rare swap times.

I am with you Ken. I have house batteries on both sides. My fenderliners are hard to get back in. I am going to devise a "quick disconnect" of some kind so I can get the fenders out and in a lot easier. Maybe a partial removing front of the fender liners can be invented. If batteries are taken care of they won't have to come out very often. I tie a rope on mine and Teri pulls from the top while I shove up from the bottom, the 6 volts. The 12 volt is a snap, one handed chore.

20 year olds is a Good idea, what about just taking it to Walmart and having them install--I think they do it for free.

Ken,

I know my '73 23' is different than most, but it came to me with a dead 4D on the front tray (where else? its a 23). The best way I found to maneuver it was to remove the wheel liner, and jack the coach so the batteries (the engine battery had to come out first). could be slid to across a board place between the top of the tire and the edge of the battery tray. The fact that a 4D is a 100+# battery had a lot to do with this plan.

The GC2s there now can come out through the front service door one at a time (duh!). I never though of going out through the grill because mine was not removable until very recently.

I heartily agree. But my 20 yo somehow escaped and became a 50 yo. And the
13 yo isn't quite there yet. :-)

Even if I could persuade Wal-Mart to attempt it, I'd be scared to death of
the results -- they'd probably take a SawzAll to the front end to gain
access. :-(

R&R through the grille wasn't all that bad, but when I did the A/C redesign,
I mounted the receiver/dryer right in the opening. Moving it and the side
deflectors would have been even more trouble, IMHO at the time, than was
building the battery lift.

I guess I'm still recuperating from removing the 2 GC-2's and the Gp 27,
'cause I slept in this morning -- 9 hours vs my usual 6. MAYBE I'm now up
to the re-installation. :-)

Well, it worked. I put the two new GC-2's and the Gp. 27 back in with the
"battery lift" After installing the first GC-2, I made a couple of minor
mods to the lift to make it easier to maneuver into position, avoiding the
front suspension bits.

This project made me even more glad that my "pit" is open on the sides.
With any other configuration I would not have been able to maneuver the
engine hoist beneath the area of interest. If you're planning a service
rack, be sure to look at how mine turned out; there's hardly anything I'd
change about it and it was a very economical construction.

Even with the new batteries, I still didn't get to test the coach. The S-10
decided to act up -- the turn signals quit. Most drivers around here,
especially the women, think that cell phones come with an unlimited license
to violate traffic laws, especially those about turn signals. Since they
HAVE to have a hand to hold the cell phone, and need another to hold the
wheel (at least while turning), they obviously can't be expected to EVER use
turn signals. I frequently travel a route where the heavy traffic mostly
turns right into the street I'm trying to exit. When drivers signal, our
waiting traffic can proceed quickly. Without a signal, we're condemned to
wait for 1, 2, ..., 10 non-signalers to turn right. Without fixing my turn
signals, I'd lose my moral authority to continue cursing those inconsiderate
ignoramuses. :-(

Ken, NO hand held electronic devices, (cell phones, Ipods, GPS etc)allowed while driving in Ontario, at least a $155 fine and could be more. Has actually somewhat reduced the number of people I see on the phone. If I could collect a bounty, I'd have a GMCMH in a week !!!!(GMC content) And you're absolutely right about the phone users not using the turn signals.

Ken,
You mean to tell me that you can still get turn signals on vehicles
in N. Carolina? I wonder how many states still allow them?

I have 4 old MG's with no turn signals and I use hand signals with no
issues . There were some models even in the 50's with turn signals and
some MG sedans "trafficators" which were lighted arms that popped out to
indicate which direction the driver was turning.
Needless to say that my 31 MG-J2 has no turn signals, no fan belt, no
water pump, no main bearings and runs like a scalded dog. It is still
run in Hill Climb Competition due it's light weight. Unfortunately mine
is currently apart needing a new crank.

That no main bearings thing seems fit well with the need for a new crank.
:-)

We had a '54 XK-120 back in '57, after the Trailways bus ran me down in the

That extended finger isn't part of the original hand-signal concept, at least that's the way I remember it.

Steve,

We still get turn signals in North Carolina, but we have an awful lot of people who either don't know they are there or just don't care. I guess it is just too hard to hold the cell phone in one hand and set the turn signals while trying to hang on to the steering whee.
