Good Morning

Sorry if I'm coming across nasty in this email, I'm just disgusted and ticked off about this subject.

I bought a used Birch Screen door last fall and I cannot install it until I can get some parts.

I have contacted Bob B several times and have had a friend of Bob's contact him. NOTHING ! It is apparent that Bob has no intention of doing anything productive or useful with this product in the near future, so why doesn't he sell it or pass it on to someone that will actually provide a product and service that many of us really need ??? What a shame to have a product like this available but basically LOCKED off the market.

I need the plastic that gets put on the coach frame around the door that supports the door when it's closed. People have said you can get this at Home Depot, etc. NO WAY, I have searched the internet to death for anything close and I've personally visited every home center and paneling store that exists in our area, trust me, if someone can find it they're a better person than I am!

Does anyone know where I can get some of this stuff ?? I'm dead in the water until I do, so there sits my Birch Screen Door in the basement.

And Bob, not to be disrespectful, but either do something with this product or give it up so someone else can !

Thanks

Have a great day !!!
Ray

have you looked at some of the aluminum extrusions that are avalable??
If you Google "aluminum extrusions profiles" you can get some idea of
what is avalable and might fit your needs,,,,,,,,,,,Terry

Hi Terry....yes, I have also searched for alum extrusion profiles......not much luck without having to jury rig something to work. The plastic that Alex Birch designed would be so simple to install and the profile is perfect.

I do some add'l searching just to make sure I haven't missed anything.

Thanks

Have a great day !!!

Ray,

If you will post a photo or point to a previous post of the plastic part and profile you need I will look at our local stores.

Bob B has always been very reponsive and helpful to me on a number of GMC projects. Perhaps something is going on in his life at the moment that prevents him from helping you.

Hi

Here is a sketch of the Birch Screen Door Molding that I am looking for. It connects to the coach door frame on the top and two sides. Kind of a Frost Beige color that matches the 78 Royale exterior color.

Link is: http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=32945&title=birch-screen-doorco&cat=5422

If anyone can find any of this, I would greatly appreciate knowing of a source that I could buy it from.

THANKS !

Have a great day !!!

Hey Ray

If this can be made out of wood, I am pretty good with wood and such.

Though not a professional cabinet maker, I have been known to creat some amazing things.

Am I correct that the small channel holds onto the metal lip around the door frame?

It looks like a joiner that you would use join two different thicknesses of masonite together modified by removing one of the lips altogether and shortening one of the other lips.

Hi Larry

Not a bad idea, sitting here thinking if wood would be strong enough. The thickness of the material is only 1/16". Maybe I make what I need out of Delrin or UHMW. Might be kind of pricey !

Let me think about that one.

SO WHEN ARE WE HAVING STEAKS? Then I'll deliver the seats !

That is correct Tom, the 3/16" dimension which is actually a 1/8" opening slides over the door frame. then you can see how the rest is recessed into the coach and allows the screen door to fit into the door frame so the outer door can still close.

Not sure if I understand what you mean by the joining thing.

Have a great day !!!

Not sure if I understand what you mean by the joining thing.

Did you ever look at how two of those off white waterproof panels are joined together in cheesy gas station bathroom remodels? They use a h channel to join the two 1/8 inch panels together.

Well there are other h channels to join the edges of 1/2 inch waterproof panes flush with 1/8 inch waterproof panels. Just find some of that and modify it to fit.

Google plastic extrusion companies and see fir they have online catalogs. I am sure I have seen extrusions that look like they could be modified for your use. I doubt Alex had that stuff made just for him but there are also compnies that will extrude anything you are willing to pay for.

You bet Tom. Some people out here said you can find this stuff at paneling shops or at Lowes or Home Depot, I've looked at every shop I could find, nothing even close.

Thanks for mentioning it.

Have a great day !!!

There's a company called Outwater Plastics (1-800-631-8375) that seems to carry a lot of that sort of stuff in plastic and metal.
I have their catalog, and if I can find anything, I'll try to get you a part number.

Good luck with your project. I know how frustrating it can be when you're this close and can't finish a project!

I have just put some pictures of the molding on the photo site.

Note: I have not replaced the rubber mold by the door catch so
there is a large hole by the frame in one picture.

Ray,

I hope you have better luck with your Birch door installation than I had.
In early 2000, while completing the coach renovation in preparation for our
May departure for Alaska, I installed one. I met Pete Pappas in Marianna,
FL, on I-10, to get the door because I KNEW from previous visits about their
state bird -- the mosquito. He was on the way to GMCMI Rayne, LA and had an
extra Birch door.

I spent the next week of my life trying to get that darned thing to fit the
way I thought it should, including allowing me to close and latch the entry
door with the help of a neighbor and his little kid! Never did get the
darned thing to fit really properly; the door was always a little too
difficult to latch. To top it off, for some reason we had no significant
mosquito problem: the few we saw were so big and clumsy you could knock
them off before they had a chance to start drilling.

First thing I did when I got home was remove the thing. Then I sold it to
someone I didn't expect to ever see again. :-)

In the unlikely event I ever get the urge again, it will be satisfied with a
folding door, similar to the Phantom.

Ken,

IIRC someone noted in an email to the GMC net that Alex used to spend HOURS
getting these doors to fit and close correctly when he installed them.

Guess I'm lucky the one on Double Trouble fits great and closes easily!

I'm glad to see that we are having the problem and addressing it in some way.
Extrusions are the main stopper in cost of this kit.
We spend several thousand dollars on new aluminum extrusions for our
filter housings and have heard that the plastic ones are just as
pricey.

Interesting that you posted this Jim, I was at Lowes on Saturday and I was looking at this EXACT material, I thought, WOW, I wonder if this would work! I then thought that the door needed something more solid and firm to seal against. But this has an excellent profile and the one edge would lock into the space between the wall paneling and the coach door frame. I may just give this a shot!

Thanks so much for sending the info !!

For the others, here is a link to the site showing it's profile....
