I know that there was considerable comment on "favored"
tires for our coaches. I am traveling to New Braunfels, TX
on Sunday to bring our new buggy home to Oklahoma City.
The eBay auction showed a picture of a front tire with
lots of tread, but that is only 1 of 6 or 7. I don't
know how old the existing tires are. I wish to be fully
prepared to fork out for a new set if the existing tire
are too ancient to trust for a ~500 mile trip home.
I distinctly recall that "steel" sidewalls were really
discouraged. I'd like some brand/model recommendations.

If you are going to buy a new set of tires (stock is 16.5")
it may be a good time to consider an upgrade to the more
modern 16" wheel and tire.
If you don't have them already the Alcoa's really
are a nice improvement in lower weight
and better looks.
For your drive home; check your brakes and take your time.

I'm a cheapskate, so I shop sales and price. I also put on Cooper Discoverer H/T tires and have been VERY HAPPY.
I've worked on my coach's ride height, steering, etc. and I have no wander and my steering is pretty tight. Still need to replace the idler arm and relay bushings which should make it better yet. But the wife drives the coach and she's fine with all of it, so that's a big plus.

Here are your choices from the most expensive to lest.
Michelin
Cooper
BF Goodrich Commercial TA (Costco and Sam's Club)
Kuhmo KL78 (Tire rack)
The first three are an all season highway tire
The last one that I and Rob Mueller have are an on road - off road tire with superior traction on wet grass and mud. Also the last one is the cheapest of the bunch.
There are a lot of other tires available with names you know and names you have never heard of.
If the tires are more the 10 years old I would consider replacing them. If the are less, look at their condition both the inside and the outside. Air them up to 65 PSI. Drive them for 25 to fifty miles, stop and check the temperature of all of them with you hand or a digital gauge. If one is hotter then you have a problem. If not then drive double the miles and check again. After the 3rd or 4th check (doubling the miles each time) you will be happy that they are all OK.
Also if you start feeling a thumping like a tire out of balance stop and find the problem. More then likely you have a tire going. I have moved a lot of old coaches and only once ever had a flat tire enroute. On that particular coach the tires were over 20 years old and we got the coach out of a junk yard for $999.00

Here's a link to the Michelin website that has good info on tires:

The one titled "RV Tire Guide" has info on how to determine the age of
tires.
Ken is correct in saying; "There are a lot of other tires available with
names you know and names you have never heard of." I will expand that to
note that you're going to get recommendations from contributors to the GMC
net for just about EVERY one of them!
You may be told that "I put such and such tires on my pickup, station wagon,
car, motorcycle, boat trailer, and they sucked!" What that has to do with
tires on a GMC I have no idea!
You may be told to stay away from Chinese made tires because they suck but
one of the MOST respected contributors to the GMC net has them on his coach
and is perfectly happy with them. In fact the Kuhmo's that Ken and I run ARE
made in China!
You may be told that steel side walled tires will make your coach handle
weird and not to use them. Others will tell you that you must use them for
safety as they can handle a greater load.
At the end of the day you will have lots of opinions some will agree with
each other and others will disagree so you're back to square one! ;-)
In my case Steve Ferguson summed it up pretty well when I asked the question
if I should change the 7 year old Goodyear G-159 Steel Sidewall tires on
Double Trouble when I bought it. He noted; "there probably isn't anything
wrong with those tires but you're going to be worried that they could blow
for every mile of your trip! You might want to consider changing them for
peace of mind." That's what I did!

I agree with Ken about the old tires. (Besides his instructions, just drive on the slower end of traffic.) IF they will get you home you'll have the time to inspect everything and take your time figuring out what you need and want. THEN getting the "best" for your time and money. (for you)
It is good that the coach already has 16 inch wheels. This gives you many more options including changing to nicer wheels without buying new tires.
My three rules for RV tires:
1. Do not worry about the tread-wear ratings. Very few of us wear out our tires -- why pay for more tire than you need?
2. "New" tires shouldn't be more than a few months old. When first talking with the tire shop about them request tires under a certain age. Then personally CHECK the dates BEFORE they start any work. If the shop can not get you "new" tires, why buy tires from them?
3. I would stay away from steel sidewalls. We do not need the extra durability (and stiffness) they provide.
Everything I have said has been posted elsewhere... but the reason I replied is about the spare rim on your new coach. I do not think it will fit on all 6 positions on your coach. The newer cone shaped rim centers (spiders) have problems clearing our brakes. Check it before relying on it.
Lastly, I really agree with Ken about the "Enjoy the new coach."

Mac, Let me welcome you to the GMC Owner's Group. Glad you found a coach that suits you. Now you can begine making it your very own. Keep in mind the next International convention is in Du Quoin, Il. this fall. Only a day's drive for you. There you will see everything that you have heard about on the net. More important though, you will get to meet these folks that come up with the upgrades for our coaches and hear the stories first hand.
As Gary has already mentioned, check the date codes on those tires. And/or if you see any cracks in the sidewalls, replace them before you travel. Tires 6 years old or older are subject to blowouts without warning. I try to buy 2 new tires every 2 years. Does not hurt so much that way. You may not have any choice here. I would get online and look for tire dealers in the area of the coach, just in case.
If you have "traveling internet" it would be nice to get updates on your ride home. If not, please make notes and give us the story when you get home. My 900 mile ride home was pretty uneventful but many guys here have some real stories to tell when they drove their coach home from the previous owner's place.

In most coaches which tires tend to wear out first?
Fronts, middle or rears?
Aside from the age issue, how many miles are
most folks getting out of a set of tires?

Richard,
I would think that if you rotate them at the same mileage interval they
would all wear out at the same time.

I'm leaning towards Kumhos, but I have a no-name brand on now and they're okay. I am now concerned about the ability to get them balanced correctly (and I'm pretty sure there's no place locally to get them trued).
