Jim and I got up fairly early and packed most of the items. I had to get Teri to help me get the stuff in the box arranged so I could get the screws in the door. Jim was busy with buisness, on the telephone, for a few minutes so Teri helped. I could never have got the door screwed back on without her. We got Jim all ready for travel and hooked the van on behind. Hal was leading Jim out when we finished, about 1130. Was glad Hal could help us out. Maybe Jim will follow him to Las Crucez. Did not call to see how far they got.
Teri and I geocached over to Alexandria, La. where we parked for the evening. Will geocache our way to Monroe, La. in the morning. Have plans to hang around there for a week and then head on home to Mo.
The new engine and transmission are both doing fine. With 1700 miles on the engine the oil consumption has really slowed. I was able to stop the heater hose leak. Pulled the clamp and found the hose had been cut under the clamp.
Picked up a timing light from Harry at the convention. Will check the timing in a day or two and get the MSD timing box hooked back up. Got a knock sensor waiting for me at home. Dick Paterson told me to mount the sensor in the motor mount. Makes good sense to me after he explained why.
Was glad to see everyone and we made several new friends. There were over 130 GMC coaches there but I did not get time to look in them. It is more about the owners than the coaches now anyway.
Hope everyone arrives home safely.
Dan

I have mine mounted on the right side - removed a plug there and screwed in the KS. I like the idea of the KS being in the water jacket as sound is transmitted well there. However, I am interested in Dick's explanation as to why the motor mount area makes sense. I could be convinced to change - or not.

Dan,
Ditto on Randy's question. Will be setting mine up with TBI, and curiosity is killing the cat.

Thanks

You want the pickup to to be as far away from the valve train as possible to keep it from picking up the normal engine noise. In the head is the worse place you can use because the sensitivity has to be turned way down to eliminate the valve train noise being picked up. This makes it less sensitive to picking up low level detonation noise. Down low in the water jacket or in the motor mount are good places to use.

Pretty much what Ken said is what Dick told me. I thought I heard him say that a few years back in one of his presentations. So, this time I grabbed him and visited with him about this. He drew me a diagram. I have got to get down there and take a look where to drill the 3/8 hole and thread it. Dick said on driver's side near the "rolled" material.

I tried mounting mine at the front mount with out much luck. I called MSD for their input and they suggested the water drain plug in the block. On the passenger side there 2 drain plugs I moved my oil lines a little to mount it in the front drain this way I can still drain the block with the other plug when I change coolant.

That is where I installed mine except I used the plug a few inches forward of that plug as I use that plug to drain the block when its time to change coolant and I'd rather not have to take a chance damaging the sensor. I modified the oil line bracket to make room for the sensor when I was installing the motor.

Dan,

Jim didn't get very far (Navasota) when the belt that turns the water pump broke. Got a new one at NAPA (parts man had grey hair!) and put it in. Made it through Austin about 4PM and Jim fueled a little west of Austin. We parted there as he was wanting to make tracks for CA. Last we saw him was at Fredericksburg. Turned out we both made it to Ft. Stockton before stopping for the night, but didn't see each other. We made it home about 1:30 PM Fri. Called Jim and he was about to the NM/AZ line at that time. We had a real bad dust storm later in the afternoon - I think he missed it. He's probably home by now.

Thanks Hal. I really do appreciate you helping Jim get out of there. I was afraid he would make a left turn and get lost without Grace. I talked with him this morning. He was in the Los Angeles area. He thought he would get home tonight. He told me about the belt. He deserved a good trip. Hope things keep going well for him from now on. Walt worked hard on Jim's fuel injection system at the convention.
