Carleton,
Leigh's price was a little high when first released, IMHO. Then he spent a
LOT of money designing and having the reverse flow water pump cast and
machined; naturally he's trying to recoup that investment; I seriously doubt
that he ever will.
With my 455 stripped of even the serpentine belt and accessories, I couldn't
do a very good evaluation, but I did look carefully at what's left there.
I'm convinced that by using the Ford double crankshaft pulley and two
belts, one could devise a serpentine system even more simply than I did on
the Cadillac. The three tapped holes on the same plane at each end of the
Olds heads, plus a couple of others in the block, offer easier bracket
design and fabrication than does the Cad.
You may not have noticed that any accessory on my Cad can be removed without
affecting any other -- a real blessing compared to the Olds where everything
hangs on top of the water pump. I believe the same discrete mountings can
be achieved with serpentine belts on the Olds. With the Ford double
crankshaft pulley, it should be feasible to drive the A/C compressor, on its
OEM mount, and the water pump from the forward pulley. The rear pulley
could be used to drive the PS pump and a CS130D or similar small alternator
with them mounted to a simple mounting plate secured to the front of the L.
cylinder head and block.
Actually mocking up the installation might change that proposal -- I settled
on about 10 different ones before finally changing to that I used on the
Cad. But it appears to be a very do-able project. Because some simple
metal working, including cutting, bending and welding thick steel plate, and
some simple lathe work for spacers and adapters, one needs to have those
skills or a good relationship with someone who does. A strange, or
uncooperative, shop might charge BIG bucks for some of those trivial tasks
-- my friends charged me nothing.
