Ken,
Way cool! When you get time if you could put together a bill of materials so
others can copy your setup I'm sure it would be appreciated.
BTW, I spotted the neat trans oil pan, I got one of those from Bob Miller
last summer. I'm going to install it on the switch pitch trans I've got for

Subject: [GMCnet] Cad 500 Serpentine Belt
In case anyone's interested, I posted some photos of the serpentine belts on
my Cad 500. It turned out to be a pretty simple arrangement by using two
belts. That enabled me to get good wrap on all the accessories. But I was
not able to include automatic tensioners. With short belts, that does not
seem, after only very brief use, to be a problem.

Bruce,
I'm intimately familiar with Leigh's serpentine system. While mine was
designed by Bobby Moore and modified by Sam Young and me, it's basically the
same as Leigh's. And when, after selling about 40 systems to run the OEM
water pump backward, with mixed results, he designed a reverse flow pump, I
was the guinea pig. I ran his first prototype pump on my coach for about
2000 miles before it came apart, stranding me on I-95. The design changes
from that incident probably were the final needed changes (after about 4-5
earlier ones) to make the reverse flow pump reliable -- my new design one is
still hanging on the wall in the shop, never installed.
Unlike some, neither Bobby nor I ever had any overheating with the OEM pump
running backward.
As an evaluation: I like serpentine belts very much -- witness my efforts
to include them with my Cad conversion. But I personally would not pay the
price Leigh or Marsh want for their setups.
I'll take a quick look at the possiblity of using 2 on the Olds.

Ken,
Awesome job, with great worksmanship, and well thought out design. I'm always amazed at your (and others) ability to mix and match parts from other vehicles. Im guessing that comes from keen observation and a good u-pick-it yard, but if there's more to it than that I'd be curious to hear your take. Also, I'd like to know more about the CS 130 alternator - - I'm not that familiar with the different generations, and it seems like it would be a good update for the Olds as well. If you had a rough range of years, I would traipse through my U-pick-it now that it's getting warmer here.
Thanks,

Thanks, did you see the price $1,100.00 he is out of line.

Craig,
Thanks for the kind comments.
To find CS-130D applications, go to:
http://www.knappsautoelectric.com/
<http://www.knappsautoelectric.com/>Select Products/Delco
Generators/CS-130D.
They've got lots of other good info there also. Until I started trying to
find a more modern, less electrically noisy alternator to install with my
Cad 500 & EFI, I didn't realize how much better units are available to
easily replace our old ones. The CS-130 and CS-144 are apparently direct
replacements for the SI-series in the GMC. The CS130D is a further
improvement on the CS-130, more reliable and even less noisy (uses avalanche
diodes for spike suppression). However, it is not a direct, bolt in
replacement for the SI because it's much smaller. Even with its 100-105A
output, it's about 1/2 the size of the SI-, and there are the usual
aftermarket upgrades, which I've seen advertised as offering up to 200A
output. The output is very high at low RPMs too.
As you'll see at Knapps, there are at least 9 different physical
arrangements of the mounting and connection arrangements available. Mine,
from a '99 S-10 Blazer, is #8231. There may be better mounting
arrangements, but this one worked OK for me.

Carleton,
Leigh's price was a little high when first released, IMHO. Then he spent a
LOT of money designing and having the reverse flow water pump cast and
machined; naturally he's trying to recoup that investment; I seriously doubt
that he ever will.
With my 455 stripped of even the serpentine belt and accessories, I couldn't
do a very good evaluation, but I did look carefully at what's left there.
I'm convinced that by using the Ford double crankshaft pulley and two
belts, one could devise a serpentine system even more simply than I did on
the Cadillac. The three tapped holes on the same plane at each end of the
Olds heads, plus a couple of others in the block, offer easier bracket
design and fabrication than does the Cad.
You may not have noticed that any accessory on my Cad can be removed without
affecting any other -- a real blessing compared to the Olds where everything
hangs on top of the water pump. I believe the same discrete mountings can
be achieved with serpentine belts on the Olds. With the Ford double
crankshaft pulley, it should be feasible to drive the A/C compressor, on its
OEM mount, and the water pump from the forward pulley. The rear pulley
could be used to drive the PS pump and a CS130D or similar small alternator
with them mounted to a simple mounting plate secured to the front of the L.
cylinder head and block.
Actually mocking up the installation might change that proposal -- I settled
on about 10 different ones before finally changing to that I used on the
Cad. But it appears to be a very do-able project. Because some simple
metal working, including cutting, bending and welding thick steel plate, and
some simple lathe work for spacers and adapters, one needs to have those
skills or a good relationship with someone who does. A strange, or
uncooperative, shop might charge BIG bucks for some of those trivial tasks
-- my friends charged me nothing.

Ken,
Do you recall what pulleys you used to do the Serpentine conversion on the
455?
I want to upgrade to the CS130D alternator and also upgrade to a Sanden type
A/C compressor. Going to a serpentine system at the same time makes a bit
more sense since I already need to fabricate some custom brackets for the
alternator. I'd like to source as many of the required parts as possible
from the men's mall.
Thanks,
Les Burt

[GMCnet] 455 Serpentine belt system. [message #78091 is a reply to message #78079] |

I'm looking for feedback from those of you who have done a serpentine belt
conversion on their 455. Pros & cons. I've heard that some have taken the
serpentine setup off due to problems. What where the problems?
I want to upgrade to a CS130D alternator, Sanden type A/C compressor, and a
newer PS pump with a hydroboost return port. These accessories can easily be
found used in the men's malls and most come with serpentine pulleys
nowadays. Doing a serpentine conversion might reduce the overall difficulty
in finding suitable accessories. Custom brackets will no doubt be required,
but I'm good at that.
I am also curious if anyone has done a serpentine conversion that spins the
water pump & fan in the original direction? I'd prefer this simply so that
replacement waterpumps are easier to find. I don't want to have to look for
another fan or special water pump.
What Crank & water pump pulleys are being used? What tensioner? Knowing this
info would save me a bit of time in looking for suitable donor parts.
Thanks,
Les Burt
