Ray had an awning, AT Montgomery open house on Sun., that manually cranked
up into a housing on the roof. No hardware on the side of the coach. Does
anyone have info on that awning? He could not remember anything about it,
name, source etc.

Ray's Awning was part of a group buy. It was made in Holland, and is a work of art. Ken Henderson and several others have this awning. I seem to remember that the buy was managed by one of the members, and Carefree did the actual middlework.
A very nice awning.

Tom Phipps,
75 GMC, with older Carefree awning.

JoAnne,
While they look nice in or out, they are not very sturdy and
additional modividations must be made to ensure any longevity or use
in any weather conditions other than perfect. I would not even deploy
one without first drilling and pinning the support legs, then securing
them with tethers to a tree or stake driven well into the ground. If
I had it to do over again, I would rather have a ZipDee. Through all
the wind, rain and weird weather we've had here at Montgomery, the guy
in the GMC across from us has never taken in his ZipDee and that tells
me a lot about design and strength.

JoAnne,

The awning is the Omnistor 6502, made in Belgium. I discovered it a few
years back when trying to find a streamlined alternative to the
profile-marring arms on most awnings.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=13288&cat=4173

http://www.omnistor.com/gb/products/omnistor6502.php

<http://www.omnistor.com/gb/products/omnistor6502.php>After becoming
precariously close to privately importing them myself, Richard Floyd on
Vancouver Island, managed to convince Carefree of Colorado to import them,
exclusively for us, along with the other Omnistor products they sell under
their brand name. Only the hardware is imported; Carefree fabricates and
installs the fabric, saving a lot on import duties and giving us access to
the much broader choice of fabrics available here. The price is about the
same as ZipDee, unless equipped with the 12 VDC motor control, which adds a
couple of hundred $.

The awning is not as sturdy as the arm-equipped versions -- no box awning is
-- but if properly secured immediately after deployment, it will withstand a
lot of wind load -- mine's been out in some pretty severe thunderstorms
since I have it for rain protection as much as for sun shielding. The posed
photo linked to above DOES NOT have the awning secured. I use a rope 45*
from the top of each vertically positioned arm to a secure ground anchor,
usually a spiral stake.

The latest email address I have for Richard is rgf@island.net. I don't know
if he's still fooling with them nor how many orders he must accumulate
before forwarding them to CofC.

Steve & others

While I am happy in what anyone does to increase the use of their coach, I too have found from the installation and service end of the awning issue that a Zip Dee has less trouble all around.

I look at an awning as an extension of useable space for your coach.  When yo pull in and set up, you roll out the awning and use that space as storage, to live in and it should be more than just a "fair weather" space.  I think that is how you should look at your awning.

I know all about the angle that the arms are "ugly", the Zip Dee awnings are nothing like the A&E or the Carefree arms which I feel really are ugly.  At least the Zip Dee arms have a quality look, smaller with a very smooth action.

Zip Dee awning are not "off shelf" which means you will not find them stacked high in the back of some RV dealership.  Each one is custom made for the customer, there are no upgrades-- every one of them is made of Sunbrella fabric with an aluminum roll up sheild.  All the hardware is polished and every one of them is personally packed and shipped.

Forget the "group buy" thing.  Zip Dee "don;t play that game" .  The work only through small RV dealerships and $ is not the reason you buy a Zip Dee.  More like the "Curtis Mathis" TV advertising of old.  "The most expensive TV on the planet and Damn well worth it".  They are the quality choce not the cheapest so don;t look at them that way.

I have a full sized patio awning on the driver AND passenger sides of my coach "Larry".  Last year at the Drag Race Rally we had monster rain and wind.  The weather people called it 50 MPH gusts, we were out there on a flat, open field.  My coach was rockin & rollin-- I left both awnings out on a hard tilt.  I just wanted to see what would happen-- you know me I "wanna know".  @ 2AM I went out and rolled them in, I could not sleep from the coach being pushed about by my 2 masted main sails out!  I have pics!

So sorry bout downing others but I want an awning that will do the job and Zip dee does that.  Jim K. & I both are dealers.  If you want one, call us.  I can have one drop shipped to you or I would be happy to install one for you.  Cost is @ $1350 with shipping and all depending on what material you choose.  If you wanna shop price don't pit us agianst eachother cause i do not play that game.  Get a quality part, expect to pay a fair price.  You can buy a Carefree for less, don;t even look if you wanna get the cheapest-- if you want the best, you know what to do.

Just the way I see it,

Jim Bounds

Steven,

From an old timer who bought his first rv in the 70's and has owned several
but still looking for my first GMC. In the late 70's while parked in
Colorado, weather perfect,
I left the ZipDee up one night. It came a big rain, next morning the ZipDee
looked like an elephant's bathtub. Instead of punching a hole to drain it,
I used the water hose, siphoned the water out, rolled it up, no problem.
Except it stretched and bent the roller. I straightened the roller and put
up with the trouble of rolling up the stretched awning until I traded up to
a 5th. wheel. Live & learn. When I buy a GMC I will get a ZipDee and never
leave it open overnite, regardless how good the weather has been.

That awning looks a lot like the Gerrard legless awning I have on the
SOB. When the wind hits 16 kts, it closes automatically. Cost the PO
about five grand. I thank him.

what's the advantage if you have to drive stakes in the ground and set up poles and run ropes to hold it down?

None, but in all fairness, you really have to tether even the finest
awnings that do not have an automatic closer in the case of high
winds. I haven't seen anything that can withstand a microburst of
wind unless it was tethered. I've lost two awnings to those darn
gusts so far. Even the ZipDee should be be tethered to ensure it will
be there when you get back. The one across from me here in Montgomery
was secured to stakes in the ground and it took the worst winds weve
had during the convention. I was impressed. The Omnistor has pretty
whimpy telescoping legs. To give you idea of the force of a
microburst, it sheared the cast alumimun brackets (nope, didn't pull
out the screws through the fiberglass) on both ends and lifted the
entire assy over the top of our GMC. What a mess.

That awning looks a lot like the Gerrard legless awning I have on the
SOB.  When the wind hits 16 kts, it closes automatically.  Cost the PO
about five grand.  I thank him.

I can buy it, have dealt with them a great deal.  You just really need to know the good and bad about that sort of awning.

Jim,
Now you know why I responded the way I did when you asked me where
the switch was for activating the awning. There might be one of yours
in my future. I'll look around and try to find the zipdee you're
referring to.

Great idea Jim! What size would you recommend for a 23"?

I haven't been to my coach to measure it yet, but it looks like the distance
from the front of the main cabin door to the rear seam. That's what KenH has
on his it seems. I know that's longer than stock, but maybe you could sweet
talk them into longer sizes?

If you get few people that want the arm less CareFree units, I can
coordinate a pricing that will be very competitive.
The armless units can present problems when a sudden gush of wind comes up
suddenly.
Almost impossible to mount it securely on the coach to avoid the leverage.
This Summer has been a busy one with the Zip Dee awnings. seems like we have
been quoting and receiving orders.
