I had 200 miles of motorcycle therapy today. It was a beautiful 70*
spring day, snow is still glistening on the surrounding mountains. Eloise
rides also and the girls love it when it's cool enough to wear all your
leathers. One of the destinations was to Carson City Harbor Freight to pick
up a ball joint puller. A pleasant interlude was a chance for a first
meeting and visit with the hospitable GMCers Roy and Paula Keen in nearby
Minden.

Oh I'm not stopping now Steve, I'm just starting over. The shop didn't do
the alignment because I didn't trust them to do the repair and I want to do
the mods; I intend to end up with the correct setup including drilled
knuckles and zerks. I wish I had wiggled the wheels before I took it in.
I'll have them check the alignment after I do the repair.

I like Phil's idea of reinstalling the hub and using the additional
leverage of the slide hammer to move the hub around and get a better look at
the problem. I'm going to get some help doing that; I may have initially
missed something by lying underneath and wiggling the wheel myself.

Fred mentioned normal play in the lower ball joint. I'm not familiar with
that yet but I wouldn't think normal play would allow wheel wiggle. I'll be
looking at every thing again, including the ball joints.

Thanks Jim. I checked JimK's receipt; the work done was almost a year and
a half ago and we didn't inspect the wheel bearings at that time; my bad.
It was a new coach to me and I didn't realize the critical nature of
servicing those components. The PO said the bearings had been done 5K miles
before I bought it; that would mean there is now 18K since bearing service.
The up shot is, I don't know when the bearings were last done.

The tire wear was pretty even on both sides with a little more wear on the
loose wheel but the BFG tires were close to worn out at 13K miles. I've
replaced them.

Thanks for offering your bearing puller Gary, 49er Bob McKechnie in
Sacramento has already offered his TZE puller.

Thanks for your response too Ken. With you guys help I'm getting a better
understanding of the bearing setup. I'll be checking for a .0095 preload
spacer Phil. I'm wrapping my head around the fact that there is no
provision to adjust preload as wear progresses and that is why dimensions
are critical. With zerks and 100K bearings it will be worth all the
effort.

nice report and thanks for that, was real glad to hear you are going the
zerk way, we have to stop tearing up the front end every 25K miles for
grease.

nice job, but get with it, Auburn is coming up right in your back yard;>)
